About the Role, Mission or Department OverviewWe're looking for a Senior Android Developer to join our mobile platform engineering team building games experiences for our flagship New York Times Games App. You'll help design features that delight our customers, and build capabilities and building blocks to ensure our team in delivery. You'll help shape technical direction while raising the bar for performance, accessibility, and code quality. Working with product, design, and engineering partners, you'll turn player needs into thoughtful experiences and help the team deliver and improve them at scale.NYT Games is a collaborative team that values inclusion, diversity and personal growth. You can typically expect to come into the office 3+ days/week.Responsibilities:Architect and build scalable, maintainable, and features using Kotlin and modern Android frameworksTech Lead projects and contribute to app architectural decisions, code review, technical roadmap and delivery estimationsWork with product, PMO, design, data, QA, and other engineers to guide product development and translate our requirements into technical specificationsBe a technical guide to junior and mid-level developers, encouraging skill growth and adopting developer toolsPromote best standards in Android development, and engage with the community of Android developers at the TimesDemonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.You will report to the Engineering Manager, Games App.Basic Qualifications:5+ years full time experience as a Software Engineer3+ years of Android-focused experienceExperience building user interfaces with complex animations and user interactions2+ years of experience with Kotlin, including writing unit tests, networking, data persistence and UIDemonstrated understanding of modern Android technologies such as Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Hilt/Dagger, and RoomExperience designing clean app architectures using modern industry design patterns like MVVM, MVI, or Clean ArchitectureExperience translating product goals into quality shippable codeKnowledgeable and passionate about AI coding tools especially with mobile developmentPreferred Qualifications:Experience working with backend engineers and understanding of backend architectureExperience dealing with high traffic distributed systemsPrevious mobile game development experience running games at scale in productionPrevious experience leading the team and mentoring junior engineersThis role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.#LI-HybridREQ-020812Compensation and Benefits For This Role:In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
