Department Summary
Students in the Humanities Division of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences pursue their passions while also acquiring the tools needed to thrive in tomorrow’s careers. The research, communication, and critical thinking skills we teach are endlessly applicable and never become obsolete. Our students grapple with ethical quandaries, hone analytical skills, derive knowledge from a vast archive of human creations and experiences, and develop the cultural competencies needed to build global partnerships and connections.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.Position Overview
The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of North Texas is seeking a part-time Adjunct Instructor to teach courses in American Sign Language (ASL) within our growing ASL program. This is an exciting time to join the program, which currently offers a full ASL language sequence and is launching a new Minor in ASL Interpreting Studies in Fall 2027. We are especially interested in candidates who are Deaf or hard of hearing and bring native or near-native fluency in ASL along with lived cultural expertise.
Responsibilities Teach one or more sections of undergraduate ASL courses, such as ASL I–IV, following the department's established curriculum and course objectives. Deliver instruction primarily in ASL, fostering an immersive language-learning environment. Assess student progress in receptive and expressive ASL skills through structured assignments, quizzes, and in-class evaluation. Incorporate Deaf culture, community norms, and current events into instruction. Hold regular office hours and respond to student communication in a timely manner. Maintain accurate attendance and grade records using the university's learning management system. Participate in occasional program meetings and curriculum discussions. Uphold the program's classroom leadership principles, which emphasize student accountability, direct feedback, cultural immersion, and professional growth.Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, Education, or a related field. Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language. Prior experience teaching ASL at the high school or college level. Strong understanding of Deaf culture and community.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching in a college or university setting. Familiarity with ASL teaching methodologies, such as ASL-only immersion approaches and curricula including Signing Naturally. Connections to the local Deaf community and willingness to help connect students with community events and resources. BEI Advanced certification or higher (if not Deaf)
