Job Description
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Interpreter II functions as an advanced-level, professional interpreter for LSC students, faculty, staff and administration and for visitors to LSC who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interpreters strive to advance in sign language skill proficiency in order to provide the highest level of professional interpreter services possible.
Interpreters support and promote all persons' right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides Sign Language translation (voice and signing) and related Sign Language formats:
for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing,
for all LSC students, faculty, staff and administration, and for visitors to LSC,
in all requested Lone Star College locations and settings, and
at the appropriate language and register level.
Analyzes source language content, meaning, and intent to accurately deliver information to the target audience.
Communicates client information, client status, and any concerns or challenges to supervisor.
Communicates with and gathers information from faculty in order to effectively prepare for classroom sessions for both faculty and students.
Actively researches situations (and potential situations) involving new, technical, or complex information to gain an understanding of what will/may be interpreted.
Acts as a mentor for level one and part-time Interpreters.
Ethically models positive and inclusive employee behavior.
Attends and actively participates in ASR department meetings and activities.
Performs administrative and support duties within the Office of Governance, Accountability, and Compliance (OGAC), as needed. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
assisting with scheduling and billing
responding to general inquiries
distributing, collecting, maintaining, and completing documents, records and materials in a variety of systems and methods, accurately and in a timely manner
communicating both verbally and in writing with students, faculty, and staff
Continuously reviews current processes and procedures, and shares challenges and improvement ideas with supervisor and team.
Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Strong fluency in both Sign Language and English with the ability to preserve the meaning, tone, and emotional value of the original speech and have a firm grasp of both the source and the target languages, including all idioms
Ability to effectively interpret in higher-level (BEI Advanced or equivalent) interpreting situations
Ability to effectively mentor lower-level Interpreters
Ability and willingness to accept interpreting assignments at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area, as needed, including evenings and weekends
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language and English, including the meaning and spelling of words and an understanding of the rules of composition and grammar
Ability to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, and other related federal, state, and local regulations
Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct as adopted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission
Thorough knowledge of the Deaf culture and the Deaf community
Proficient knowledge of computer use in the workplace is required, including typing, maintaining an electronic work calendar in the specified program(s), utilizing internet search engines, as well as a variety of programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and to quickly develop rapport with a wide variety of people
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact and diplomacy
Must be sensitive to cultural differences
Excellent listening and customer service skills
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and follow-through
Ability to be self-directed when appropriate, utilizing resources available to further the mission of the department
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Uses fingers (fine finger dexterity), hands and arms to communicate using Sign Language for extended periods of time for most of the working day
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Sitting, standing, and walking around is often required in order to maintain line of sight with clients as well as to provide services in certain settings (i.e. campus tours, clinical settings)
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound
Ability to convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately and concisely both in English and in Sign Language
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
Interpreting assignments occur at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area
This position is a full-time position working 185 days per year (August - May), plus holiday pay
Includes evening and weekend assignments
PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, phone and other general office equipment
Internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
Work is performed in a variety of environments, mostly in climate-controlled office, classroom, meeting and convention environments with minimal exposure to safety hazards. May include indoor and/or outdoor laboratory environments with exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, etc. May include work in close quarters (e.g., simulated or real truck-driving cab) as well as providing remote services
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
Reliable mode of transportation to travel between assignments within the LSC Service Area
Active BEI Advanced certification or higher, or active BEI-recognized equivalent certification (prior BEI- I level not accepted)
Salary
Hiring salary range is: $52,000 - $59,800
Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
