About the firm

Our client is a family-owned general contractor in New York City, building for select private residential clients. Over nearly four decades the firm has grown from small works into large-scale full-gut renovations in Manhattan’s premier residential buildings. It employs roughly 45 people across its office and its project sites.

This is the firm’s in-house human resources position, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer. A professional employer organization supports payroll, benefits administration and related compliance; the HR Generalist is the company’s day-to-day HR lead and its point of contact with them. Job-site safety remains with field leadership, and the HR Generalist coordinates with them on safety records and training.

The role

You are the company’s human resources function. The role exists to help the firm make better hires, keep good people, and stay compliant with federal, New York State and New York City employment and labor law, including workplace-safety recordkeeping and training requirements under OSHA. Working closely with the COO and the senior managers, you learn how each part of the business actually operates and use your own judgment to plan and carry out the work across recruiting and hiring, onboarding and retention, employee relations, records and policy. Full-time and exempt.

Responsibilities

• Define each role with the hiring manager before a search begins, and agree the outcomes expected of it.
• Write and post job openings, including the good-faith pay range required by New York State and New York City law, and finalise every posting.
• Develop a variety of recruiting sources, including identifying suitable organisations and building relationships inside them.
• Review and screen applications, schedule interviews, and communicate with candidates at every step.
• Track every open position from approval to start date in the applicant tracking system shared with the COO and Finance, and make sure any automated screening or ranking tool meets NYC bias-audit and candidate-notice requirements.
• Design structured, reliable and valid interviews for each role, with consistent job-related questions, an evaluation rubric and a scoring system.
• Prepare managers to interview, evaluate and score candidates consistently and lawfully, and present candidate comparisons to senior management.
• Run onboarding and the retention work that follows it.
• Handle employee relations, records and policy.
• Own compliance, including OSHA recordkeeping and required training, coordinating with field leadership on safety records.
• Plan and run company events and professional development, and identify award and recognition opportunities for the firm.

What we are looking for

• Five or more years of HR experience covering the functions of an HR Generalist.
• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of federal, New York State and New York City employment law.
• Clear, accurate written and spoken English.
• The ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Preferred: SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification.
• Preferred: experience in New York City construction, ideally high-end residential.
• Preferred: experience as the only HR professional at a small or midsize company.
• Preferred: experience working with a professional employer organization.
• Preferred: conversational Spanish

Schedule : Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the New York City office, with occasional visits to active job sites.
