Job Summary

The Vice President of Finance is BGCC’s senior finance leader and a member of the executive leadership team. Reporting to the CEO, the position provides strategic financial direction and ensures accurate accounting, timely reporting, strong controls, regulatory compliance, and responsible stewardship of public and private funds.

This role oversees the systems and practices supporting BGCC’s Clubhouse and eight school-based programs across Carson, Watts, and South Los Angeles, including government contracts, grants, restricted contributions, fundraising, program fees, school partnerships, transportation, and capital initiatives. The Vice President advises the CEO, Board, and department leaders; translates financial information into decisions; strengthens forecasting and resilience; and aligns resources with program priorities and organizational growth.

The expected starting compensation for the role is $150,000-$175,000 annually, commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience. This is a FLSA salaried, exempt position.

Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)

Strategic Planning & Executive Leadership (20%)

· Serve as principal financial advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team on sustainability, performance, risk, growth, financing options, and major operating or capital decisions.

· Lead long-range planning, scenario modeling, cash-flow forecasting, and resource allocation aligned with BGCC’s mission and strategic priorities.

· Translate financial information into clear recommendations, risks, and tradeoffs for leaders and establish policies and standards that promote accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

· Partner across Operations, Development & Marketing, Human Resources, and programs on staffing, compensation, contracts, school partnerships, technology, facilities, and expansion planning.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Management Reporting (20%)

· Lead annual operating and capital budgets, including staffing, grant and contract projections, site and program plans, and Board approval materials.

· Maintain rolling forecasts, cash projections, and budget-to-actual reporting; investigate significant variances and coordinate corrective action.

· Produce timely financial statements, dashboards, and analyses covering cash, receivables, revenue concentration, restricted funds, site performance, and key risks.

· Build financial models for programs, contracts, facilities, and investments; strengthen departmental budget ownership; and present results and recommendations to leadership and the Board.

Accounting, Internal Controls & Financial Operations (20%)

· Oversee the general ledger, payables, receivables, cash receipts, banking, purchasing, payroll coordination, fixed assets, reconciliations, revenue recognition, and month-end and year-end close.

· Strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, approval and procurement practices, expense reimbursement, fraud prevention, documentation, and records retention.

· Lead financial administration and policy oversight for BGCC’s retirement plans and insurance programs, including funding, renewals, reporting, broker and vendor coordination, compliance, cost analysis, coverage evaluation, and leadership recommendations.

· Manage cash, reserves, investments, banking relationships, and liquidity consistent with Board-approved policy.

· Improve finance systems, workflows, data quality, and integrations, and coordinate with Human Resources on payroll, benefits, workers’ compensation, and related employment-finance processes.

Grants, Contracts & Compliance (20%)

· Oversee government contracts, grants, restricted awards, school-district partnerships, and donor-funded initiatives from proposal through closeout.

· Partner across departments on competitive budgets, invoicing, allowable costs, match and allocation requirements, supporting documentation, financial reports, and receivables.

· Monitor performance, reimbursement timing, spending deadlines, cash-flow effects, compliance risks, and funding gaps; communicate concerns and recommend corrective action.

· Support monitoring, audits, and sustainable program and site decisions by evaluating funding requirements, staffing assumptions, cost-per-youth, and long-term viability.

Audit, Board Support & External Relationships (10%)

· Lead the annual audit, Form 990 preparation, required program or governmental audits, and implementation of recommendations.

· Ensure applicable tax, charitable registration, financial reporting, employment, retirement-plan, and records-retention compliance with qualified advisors.

· Serve as staff liaison to Board finance and audit committees, preparing concise materials that support fiduciary oversight.

· Manage relationships with auditors, banks, investment and retirement-plan advisors, insurance brokers, funders, vendors, and outsourced finance providers; support insurance coverage, controls, and business continuity.

Team Leadership & Organizational Partnership (10%)

· Recruit, supervise, coach, and evaluate finance staff; clarify responsibilities, performance expectations, cross-training, succession coverage, and development priorities.

· Equip managers to fulfill budget, coding, purchasing, approval, payroll, and grant responsibilities while building constructive cross-departmental partnerships.

· Model BGCC’s values and promote a collaborative, inclusive, youth-focused, and solutions-oriented culture; perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Relationships

Internal: Works closely with the CEO, Board, executive leadership, finance staff, Human Resources, Operations, Development & Marketing, and program and site leaders to provide guidance, resolve issues, and support planning and accountability.

External: Maintains relationships with auditors, financial institutions, investment and retirement-plan advisors, insurance brokers, agencies, school partners, funders, vendors, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and other advisors.

Requirements

Skills/Knowledge Required

· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field.

· At least eight years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, including three years leading a finance function or team.

· Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit and fund accounting, restricted revenue, grants and contracts, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, internal controls, audits, Form 990, and financial reporting.

· Experience supporting a multi-site organization with multiple funding streams and working directly with a CEO, Board, and Board committees.

· Strong financial modeling, systems, and Excel skills, with the ability to improve workflows and translate complex information into practical recommendations.

· Excellent organization, accuracy, judgment, discretion, fiscal accountability, communication, and relationship-building skills.

· Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on oversight and commitment to BGCC’s mission, values, and diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications

· CPA, CMA, MBA, or a relevant advanced credential.

· Experience in youth development, education, human services, or a community-based nonprofit, including regulated government or school-district funding.

· Experience with capital projects, reserves or investments, finance-system implementation, and Paylocity or a comparable HRIS.

Environment and Working Conditions

Work is performed in office, Clubhouse, school-site, and community settings and may require local travel and occasional evening or weekend meetings and events. Additional hours may be required during budget, audit, payroll, reporting, and year-end periods. The role may involve moderate exposure to changing environmental conditions.

Physical Requirements

This position generally involves light work, including prolonged computer use, communication through written and verbal channels, standing, and occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or handling materials of moderate weight. The position also requires the ability to remain stationary while working at a computer for prolonged periods and to use computers, standard office equipment, and job-related software to enter, retrieve, review, and communicate information.
