Responsibilities

• Serve as a credentialed Associate Investigator or Principal Investigator (PI) to provide research engineering support for research, analysis, and investigations.
• Support the design, preparation, execution, and analysis of studies and experimentation.
• Select, install, and maintain instrumentation.
• Perform laboratory procedures, field studies, testing, and research activities.
• Perform scientific and administrative tasks in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, injury biomechanics, biomechanics, or related fields with minimal supervision.
• Use principles of scientific, engineering, and medical disciplines to design, develop, and accomplish project goals.
• Assist with all levels of documentation, development of testing procedures and equipment, data collection, risk assessment and mitigation, and evaluation and maintenance of research assets and facilities.
• Advise Principal Investigators, Group Leadership, and study teams in administration and execution of RDT&E, analysis, and investigations.
• Work independently with minimal strategic and application guidance and no technical direction to address analytical, theoretical, scientific, and operational questions.
• Solve analytical and technical problems and execute scientific and administrative solutions.
• Provide advanced services related to the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E program.
• Prepare reports, presentations, manuscripts, and other documentation on research progress and findings.
• Provide scientific analytical, engineering problem-solving, design efforts, and experience-based solutions related to biomechanical responses and Soldier injury prevention.
• Develop and write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Provide biomedical engineering expertise in analyzing and evaluating ongoing research through data and documentation.
• Prepare for injury biomechanics research studies, including collaboration with industry and academic partners.
• Support design and fabrication of biomechanical test equipment and devices.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and research equipment.
• Select and justify materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for research efforts.
• Provide reliable, timely, and quality biomechanical engineering services in a team environment.
• Manage and develop methodology, projects, personnel, and resources.
• Develop recommendations on PMHS research, volunteer research, quality assurance, data analysis, BSL-2 good laboratory practice, and publication of findings.
• Provide guidance to and participate within study teams during development of research work plans, proposals, data collection and analyses, and agreements.
• Prepare protocol interim and final reports, presentations, papers, and other documentation.
• Assist with writing research work plans, proposals, data collection procedures, and agreements.
• Collaborate closely with stakeholders, academia, industry, and customers on biomechanical and biomedical projects.
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Knowledge of commonly used and advanced concepts, practices, standards, and procedures within injury biomechanics, mechanics, dynamics, strengths of materials, and mathematics demonstrated through a relevant engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.
• Demonstrated experience and skill with a broad range of engineering concepts, practices, and procedures through publications, particularly related to human head and spine injury biomechanics research and PMHS research.
• Experience in programming, data acquisition, instrumentation, kinematic and video motion capture, and MATLAB.
• Specialized skills include exposure to Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) research and Biosafety Level 2 policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated experience with FDA and/or IRB approval processes.
• Demonstrated experience with mechanical material testing devices and impact devices.
• Demonstrated experience with biomedical imaging and imaging analysis tools, including CT, MRI, and X-ray technologies.
• Demonstrated experience with mathematical analysis software such as MATLAB.
• Demonstrated experience with high-speed imaging and analysis tools.
• Demonstrated experience with biomedical instrumentation, including load cells and accelerometers.
• Demonstrated experience with high-rate, high-quality data acquisition systems.
• Demonstrated experience with injury biomechanics research involving PMHS research and data, human volunteer physiological, kinematic, and biomechanical data, and/or Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs).
• Successfully pass background and drug screening

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or STEM field preferred; bachelor’s degree acceptable with directly relevant research laboratory experience.
• Experience with cadaveric research or cadaveric specimens.
• Experience taking research projects from the early stages through completion
• First-author research publications preferred.
• Experience with injury biomechanics, human head and spine injury research, or related biomedical engineering research.
• Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition, MATLAB, motion capture, high-speed imaging, and biomechanical testing equipment.
• Experience with IRB or FDA approval processes and Biosafety Level 2 procedures.
• Experience with biomedical imaging and analysis tools, including CT, MRI, or X-ray technologies.
• Experience with human volunteer data, cadaveric research data, or Anthropomorphic Test Devices.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong communication skills and professionalism at all times.
• May travel CONUS or O-CONUS.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a state-issued driver's license for independent travel to restricted meetings and field-data collection locations.
