The Tootle lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Iowa is seeking a full-timePostbaccalaureate Research Intern (paid position) to contribute to our research onhow different forms of nuclear actin regulate nucleolar activity. We use the robust genetic system of Drosophila and the well-characterized process of oogenesis, in combination with immunofluorescent and biochemical approaches, high resolution confocal microscopy, and quantitative image analyses.

This position is ideal for individualsseekingintensive, mentored research training in preparation for graduate school or a career inbiological sciences. The intern will gain hands-on experience acrossgenetics, confocal microscopy, protein biochemistry, and quantitative analysesin a highly collaborative and supportive environment. This position is idealofindividuals planning to apply to graduate school ingenetics, cell biology, developmental biology, biomedicalsciencesor related fields.

This is a paid one-year position with the possibility of renewalfor a second yeardepending on performance and available funding. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree inbiologyor related discipline, research experience withDrosophila oogenesis, confocal imaging, and image analyses. Responsibilities include analyzing data andassistingwith preparation of publications;implementingimaging anddata collection;attending lab meetings, area seminars as relevant,departmental lectures and colloquia;presenting at conferences;andmaintainingresearch projects (e.g.,lab stock maintenance,lab coordination).

RESEARCH AREAS

The internwillcontribute to the following active research programin defining the form-specific functions of nuclear actin in controllingnucleolaractivity. Our research teamleveragesthe robust genetic power of Drosophila and the well-characterized process of oogenesis in combination with high-resolution imaging and quantitative image analyses, protein biochemistry, and molecular approaches.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conductgenetic, confocal imaging, and protein biochemistry experiments using Drosophila oogenesis as the model system and tissue.

Collect, organize,processand analyzeexperimentaldataaccording to laboratory standards.

Maintain the laboratory's Drosophila stock collection.

Support lab management and contribute to a collaborative research environment.

Participate in lab meetings and contribute to science communication efforts (e.g., conference posters, manuscripts).

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Starting salary of $39,530
