PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN III/CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

Psychiatric Technician III – Emergency Appointment Type of recruitment: Open Competitive – Emergency. Exam No: Y8163B-DOJ. First day of filing: July 26, 2024. The position is temporary, up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent employment. Up to 20% bonus available for full‑time hires working on‑site in designated facilities. Responsibilities Interview clients, family members, and friends to gather information on environment, personality, and relationships that may affect illness and treatment. Makes program services referrals for persons identified as mentally ill. Coordinates or conducts auditing of client records for documentation compliance. Participates in multidisciplinary team conferences, documents continuing care, and collaborates with other mental health staff to develop treatment plans. Provides direct client care within scope of practice guidelines, completes documentation, updates treatment team, and provides referrals and linkage to community resources. Provides consultation to community agencies on utilization of mental health and support services at department‑owned clinics, in‑patient facilities, and contractors. Provides in‑service training to departmental staff and volunteers on identifying and treating mentally disordered individuals, crisis intervention, and assaultive behavior management. Administers prescribed medications orally or by injection to clients in acute psychiatric settings. Participates as a Crisis Response Team member in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Coordinates activities of a Psychiatric Mobile Response Team or similar service team with law enforcement, courts, schools, and other agencies. Serves as a Homeless Outreach and Engagement Team member, providing initial assessments in the field and linking homeless mentally ill clients to mental health services. Coordinates work of psychiatric technicians or others to deliver mental health services at in‑patient or out‑patient facilities. Coordinates or develops psychological rehabilitation programs for chronic and persistent mental illness. Leads and provides technical supervision to lower‑level psychiatric technicians and support staff. Serves as mental health service gatekeeper at the Mental Health ACCESS and Telecommunications Center, triaging caller requests and dispatching psychiatric mobile response teams. Prepares and signs applications for immediate 72‑hour detention of disturbed psychiatric clients when authorized. Qualifications Two (2) years of experience at the level of Psychiatric Technician II in Los Angeles County, defined as active participation in delivery of mental health services or indirect/directed patient care to clients who are mentally ill or emotionally disturbed. Valid and active license as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Valid California Class C Driver's License or ability to utilize alternative transportation to perform job‑related essential functions. Physical class 4 – Arduous: frequent heavy lifting over 25 lbs, bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; occasional extraordinary physical activity. Assessment Process Applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days. Performance will be evaluated when the initial period ends. Those who achieve a passing score will be considered for permanent appointment.
