Department of Developmental Services – Headquarters. Job Title: Psychiatric Technician (PT). Classification Number: JC-519802. Salary: $5,843.00 – $7,466.00 per month. Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time. Work Location: In Office (Teleworks: No). Eligibility: California resident and lawful U.S. work authorization. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable. Working Conditions Ongoing interaction with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or severe psychiatric and behavioral conditions at STAR residences and community activities. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood‑borne pathogens, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Work may include planned and scheduled travel with possible overnight stays. May be required to work mandatory overtime and/or at various sites as needed to meet staffing requirements, including extended hours and/or varying shifts. Responsibilities Provide general behavioral training and psychiatric nursing care to STAR consumers. Perform on‑site direct care, training, and participate in recreational activities with consumers. Provide cross‑training to the consumer’s community home staff or family to maintain a continuity of care. Maintain credentials as a Psychiatric Technician and attend all required trainings. Minimum Requirements Valid California Driver’s License (CDL) with expiration date and any endorsements or restrictions. Pass a drug screening. Pass a background investigation. Receive medical clearance. Hold a current Psychiatric Technician license issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician Examiners. Possess a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certificate within 12 months of employment (requires high school diploma or equivalent). Complete competency‑based Direct Support Professional training I and II, or pass the challenge test within one year of employment. Be a California resident and have lawful authorization to work in the United States. Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of cultural sensitivity for the population served, positive behavioral supports, trauma‑informed care, coaching skills training, person‑centered practices and use of less restrictive techniques. Minimum six months of prior experience providing direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities who have challenging behavior service needs. Ability to work with individuals with developmental disabilities and severe behavioral and psychiatric conditions and symptoms. Physical ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance and perform hands‑on intervention training.
