Operations Manager

Job Overview The Operations Manager plays a critical role in overseeing daily transit operations and ensuring high‑quality service delivery for Boston Public Schools in the greater Boston, MA area. The role focuses on frontline operational performance, on‑time service delivery, employee supervision, compliance with safety and service standards, technology implementation, and performance monitoring with leadership to drive operational excellence. Key Responsibilities Serve as a key member of the local leadership team, providing 24/7 management presence to frontline operations staff. Monitor and evaluate daily operations activities and employee performance, including missed runs, on‑time statistics, total work and pay hours, customer complaint data, attendance, accident data, and other operational functions. Ensure performance indicators meet or exceed client and corporate expectations, keep liquidated damages to a minimum, and correct failures. Implement and support business‑critical operations technologies (e.g., VDS, Zonar, AVL) as a subject‑matter expert and recommend best applications of these tools. Manage location performance, recommend best practices, train on technology solutions, and facilitate their implementation to improve service quality and financial performance. Coordinate dispatching, in‑service monitoring, and turn‑in activities involved in daily transit operations. Develop manpower requirements for window, yard supervisors, and evaluate patterns for revisions. Create procedure manuals for window, yard supervisors, and drivers. Hold routine meetings with window and yard supervisor staff to respond to service issues and educate them on customer or company changes and requirements. Prepare necessary daily and/or weekly reports for the company and client to ensure service quality. Track and maintain employee attendance, Zonar, and VDS system records. Recommend and discipline operations personnel as needed. Inform the Branch Manager of potential operational risks. Ensure staff are well trained, successful, and aligned with the company vision, values, and culture. Maintain positive employee and labor relations through regular engagement, performance recognition, coaching, promotions, and overall job satisfaction. Perform other duties as assigned and assist with additional areas based on location needs. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Prior transit or transportation experience. Minimum of three years of supervisory experience. Skilled in customer service delivery, problem solving, and decision making. Excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to influence without authority. Dependable and proficient in time management, meeting deadlines, and multi‑tasking. Flexible schedule availability, including early mornings or evenings. Physical Requirements Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions. Sit for extended periods (up to 6–8 hours per day); walk long distances, and walk on potentially sloped, uneven, or slippery surfaces. Push and pull objects up to 50 pounds, lift material up to 50 lbs with or without assistance, and occasionally kneel or crouch to access files or equipment at ground level. Operate in heavy traffic areas and tolerate dust, vehicle fumes, and noise. Work shifts or a flexible schedule as needed. Primarily indoors and outdoors, with significant time spent sitting, typing, or viewing a computer screen. Benefits Compensation: $68,000–$84,000. Vacation: minimum of two (2) weeks. Sick days: 5 days. Holidays: 12 days (8 standard and 4 floating).
