Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Technical Writer (contract) with extensive experience in the oil and gas and petrochemical industry. The Senior Technical Writer will support Operations Readiness activities by developing high-quality operations documentation and ensuring that facilities, systems, and personnel are fully prepared for safe and efficient commissioning, start-up, and ongoing operations. The Role The role is responsible for developing Operations Manuals, operating procedures, routine tasks, work instructions, and other operational support documentation for all systems associated with onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities. In addition, the Senior Technical Writer will actively support the Operations Team to ensure all Operations Readiness deliverables are completed in alignment with project schedules, scope, quality requirements, and budget. The position is based in our offices in Houston, TX on a Hybrid basis with regular travel throughout the region as required. Deliverables typically include: Operations and Maintenance Manuals Operating and Emergency Procedures Routine and non-routine task descriptions Work instructions and system descriptions Support Operations Readiness planning and execution , ensuring documentation is available, approved, and aligned with commissioning, start-up, and operational milestones. Participate in Operations Readiness reviews (e.g., ORR, PSSR, readiness assessments) and address documentation gaps, action items, and close-out activities. Interface with engineering, commissioning, maintenance, HSE, and operations personnel to ensure documentation accurately reflects installed systems, operating philosophy, and safe work practices. Inform the Senior Operations Technical Professional or Operations Technical Manager of projected technical issues, constraints, documentation risks, or potential shortfalls impacting Operations Readiness. Identify and highlight issues related to document development, production schedules, technical accuracy, and compliance with Operations Readiness requirements. Liaise with clients and third-party stakeholders in support of Operations Readiness work scopes, under the direction of the Senior Operations Technical Professional. Attend client technical, commissioning, and Operations Readiness meetings as required. Participate in weekly project and Operations Readiness coordination meetings. Provide comprehensive, timely progress reports on documentation status, readiness metrics, and risks to the Senior Operations Technical Professional and/or Project Manager. Ensure all work is executed in accordance with the Company Business and Quality Management Systems, maintaining discipline check sheets and readiness tracking tools. Maintain personal work plans and priorities while collaborating effectively with the broader Operations Readiness, commissioning, and project teams. Proactively communicate with the Operations Team Lead and Project Manager on documentation progress, readiness risks, and mitigation actions. Support the evaluation and preparation of Operations Readiness inputs for bids, tenders, and project execution plans, as required. Qualifications What makes you remarkable? Expected: Minimum 5 years of hands-on/practical operational experience within oil and gas, marine or petrochemical industries Authorization to work lawfully in the US without sponsorship from Wood is required Knowledge, skills and experience: Strong understanding of Operations, Maintenance, Commissioning & Start-up, and Facility Performance Testing practices (including Industry best practices and regulatory requirements related documentation need) Ability to explain the functionality of Oil & Gas equipment Competent in quickly reviewing detailed engineering drawings, like P&IDs, Cause & Effect, and Alarm Set Point registers - and its importance in creating Operations manuals & procedures Hands-on experience in Operations, Maintenance, or Commissioning & Start-up is required Strong Technical Writing Skills Experience is required Understanding of Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream Industry requirements Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Projects Wood plc
