Senior Associate, BESS Modeling & Structuring

Clearway Energy is looking for an Associate or Senior Associate in BESS Modeling and Structuring. The role involves developing quantitative models that drive BESS valuation, structured product pricing, gas generation optimization, and power market analysis. Responsibilities Develop and deploy complex optimization models and quantitative analysis for BESS dispatch optimization, renewables, gas generation, and data center infrastructure projects across the U.S. Build stochastic or machine‑learning/deep‑learning models to forecast day‑ahead, ancillary, and real‑time prices based on fundamental variables such as load, gas prices, wind, and solar generation to inform trading. Develop and maintain gas dispatch, HRCO, toll, and other structured pricing models; perform mark‑to‑market analysis and support due diligence, underwriting, and credit analytics. Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to improve forecast accuracy and optimization. Provide analytical insights from modeling results to support Clearway’s budget process, trading activities, risk management, and market advocacy. Build and enhance CWENQuant, the internal quantitative modeling platform; develop data pipelines, create automated workflows for analysis, and build market‑data dashboards using data science and optimization. Analyze trading forwards relative to historical power prices and fundamental forecasts to inform trading strategies, risk practices, origination deals, and contract pricing. Stay abreast of changing market conditions at macro and micro levels and assess their impact on markets. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Senior Associate: 3+ years of quantitative or modeling experience in the energy sector (trading firms, banks, utilities, IPPs, ISOs, or BESS companies); Associate: less than 3 years of similar experience. Programming skills: Python is required; proficiency in R, SQL, etc. Experience developing machine‑learning/deep‑learning models using scikit‑learn, Keras, or TensorFlow. Experience with linear/mixed‑integer programming and tools such as PuLP, Gurobi, CPLEX, etc. Experience with stochastic modeling and the ability to develop models from scratch. Strong quantitative background with hands‑on Python coding. Knowledge of BESS (strongly preferred), renewable and conventional (gas) assets, HRCO, and toll modeling. Strong understanding of power‑market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT). Proven ability to build robust, scalable quantitative, optimization, and forecasting frameworks for price, load, and renewable generation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate viewpoints clearly and persuasively. Capacity to manage multiple concurrent efforts and deliver high‑quality outputs on time. Collaborative team player who communicates clearly and contributes to a respectful work environment focused on detail, deadlines, and company goals. Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high‑quality work in fast‑paced, deadline‑driven settings. Ownership mindset with commitment to results and continuous improvement. Curiosity and willingness to learn and adapt in a rapidly evolving energy and market environment. Compensation Associate: $115,000 – $150,000 USD Sr. Associate: $137,000 – $177,000 USD Annual cash bonus potential based on personal and company performance.
