The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need.

Today the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan provides over 40 million pounds of food each year to those in need through more than 700 partner agencies. Partner Agencies consist of local soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries who strive to feed the more than 300,000 people in eastern Michigan who are food insecure. The excellent relationships established within the Food Bank’s 22 county service area and throughout the state has allowed for numerous programs and initiatives to help fight hunger.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Human Resources will direct the organization’s Human Resources Management function, with the goal of ensuring consistent implementation through strategic and influential organizational behavior, legal and equitable personnel actions.  Directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources function.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets personnel and organizational needs. Plans, directs and administers human resource programs. Annually reviews and makes recommendations to Executive Management for improvement of policies, procedures, and practices on personnel matters.

• Writes and revises job classification specifications.
• Develops training programs and teaches courses.
• Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures.
• Provides advice and counsel to department heads, managers and staff.
• Represents the department with the Board, related agencies and the public.
• Manages HR related vendor relationships and contracts
• Ensures that human resource programs support the long-term goals of the Board for the organization.
• Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures compliance.
• Responsible for compliance with Federal and State legislation pertaining to all human resources matters.
• Communicates changes in policies and procedures and ensure proper compliance is followed.
• Assists executive management in the annual review, preparation and administration of wage and salary program.
• Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, and/or as directed by the President on human resource matters.
• Works directly with department managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on employment and personnel matters.
• Recommends, evaluates, and participates in employee and management development.
• Supervises the staff of the Human Resources Department.
• Participates on committees, and special projects and seeks additional responsibilities.
• Shows passion and interest in helping the surrounding community and gets involved with community organizations.
• Work effectively with stakeholders from diverse populations, revealing sensitivity, understanding and acceptance of others.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred
• HR Certification preferred (i.e. SHRM)

EXPERIENCE

• Balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Minimum five to seven years related experience in a non-profit mission driven environment
• Minimum two to three years leading and developing HR team members
• Successfully communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources recruitment approaches for all levels of recruitment and staffing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of ERISA, ADA, FLSA, EEO/Affirmative Action and Department of Labor laws, requirements, statutes, and acts.
• Demonstrated knowledge of compensation and benefits issues and strategies.
• Highly experienced in dealing with sensitive and confidential personnel matters.
• Demonstrated success in leading and developing growing HR team members.
• Very strong demonstrated knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of personnel administration and management.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, vendors and the general public.
• Excellent ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in verbal and written form.
• Excellent stand-up presentation skills. 
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment with occasional exposure to warehouse conditions.
