Automation Project Manager - Manassas, VA

TRC is partnering with a leading automation and controls organization delivering complex industrial and building automation solutions. This role combines project leadership, financial management, and technical oversight to ensure successful delivery of automation projects from concept through commissioning.

Summary

The Automation Project Manager will lead multidisciplinary automation projects while managing project schedules, budgets, staffing, customer relationships, and technical execution. This role requires a strong automation background to effectively oversee engineering teams, evaluate project risks, and maintain quality standards throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate will have experience managing controls integration projects and the ability to balance technical leadership with business and financial responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Manage automation projects from initiation through final commissioning and customer acceptance

• Develop and maintain project schedules using Microsoft Project, identifying dependencies, milestones, and critical path activities

• Lead project teams and coordinate engineering resources to meet schedule, budget, and quality objectives

• Manage project financials including forecasting, margin analysis, invoicing, procurement, and cost control

• Identify and mitigate scope creep while maintaining project profitability

• Prepare and manage change orders, project reporting, and customer communications

• Coordinate staffing requirements and resource allocation across project teams

• Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior engineers

• Review engineering deliverables and maintain overall quality of software and control system deployments

• Interface directly with customers, subcontractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution

• Support onsite startup, commissioning, and project closeout activities

• Ensure compliance with company standards, project specifications, and customer requirements

Requirements

• 3–5 years of hands-on automation or controls engineering experience

• Demonstrated project management experience overseeing automation projects from start to finish

• Strong understanding of project financials, forecasting, budgeting, invoicing, and margin management

• Experience leading technical teams and coordinating project resources

• Ability to develop and manage detailed project schedules using Microsoft Project

• Strong customer-facing communication and relationship management skills

• Experience reviewing technical deliverables and maintaining project quality standards

• Knowledge of industrial automation project lifecycles including design, programming, testing, commissioning, and support
