Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Breast Surgery

Overview Texas Oncology/Texas Breast Specialists South Austin is looking for a Surgical Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Breast Specialists team. This full‑time role supports the South Austin location with occasional coverage for the San Marcos location a few times per month. Typical work week is Monday through Friday, 8 am‑5 pm with no call, weekend or major holiday duties. This position will be level 1, 2, or senior based on candidate experience. What the Surgical Advanced Practice Provider does Under supervision or in collaboration with surgical attending physicians, the APP delivers care in an outpatient clinic setting or a hybrid setting of outpatient clinic and hospital/operating room. The role focuses on evaluation, education, and longitudinal management of patients undergoing surgical care—including surgical consultation, pre‑operative preparation, hospital/intra‑operative assistance (for hybrid roles), and post‑operative follow‑up. The APP functions as a direct caregiver, patient educator, first‑assist in the OR (hybrid role only), and care coordinator. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients referred for surgical evaluation. Perform pre‑operative history and physical exams, review diagnostic imaging and labs, and assist in surgical planning. Provide post‑operative follow‑up care, including wound assessments, suture/staple removal, and monitoring for complications. Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, expectations, recovery timelines, and self‑care. Coordinate care with surgeons, nursing staff, and ancillary services to ensure seamless transitions. Document all patient encounters, assessments, and plans of care in the electronic medical record. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and incorporate evidence‑based practices into care. Develop foundational knowledge of outpatient surgical billing and documentation requirements. Assist with in‑office procedures with appropriate training. Assist in the OR as first or second assist, following credentialing and training requirements, including patient positioning, prepping, draping, and procedural support (hybrid role only). Perform post‑operative rounds and communicate findings to the surgical team (hybrid role only). Other duties as assigned. Qualifications For Nurse Practitioner: Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) with completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program. Level 1: 0‑3 years of experience, preferably in surgical/outpatient setting. Level 2: ≥3 years. Level Sr: ≥6 years. Registered Nurse First Assistant (RFA/RFNA) certification required for hybrid role. RN state licensure and registration. Current BLS/CPR certification. For Physician Assistant: Completion of an accredited PA program. Current NCCPA certification. Level 1: 0‑3 years of experience. Level 2: ≥3 years. Level Sr: ≥6 years. Current state PA license. Current BLS/CPR certification. Physical Demands Requires full range of motion, manual dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, standing and walking for extended periods, occasional lifting to 40 lb, and normal corrected vision and hearing.
