Job Posting: CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER Department of Transportation JC-521963 $4,102.00 - $4,865.00 per month Works under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates light vehicles and equipment used by the assigned unit. The incumbent may work individually or with a crew performing a range of highway maintenance tasks, including: Paving, mowing, ditch cleaning, and dig outs Removal of brush or undergrowth from the highway right of way Pavement patching and repair or replacement of guide markers, signs, fences, and guardrails Cleaning culverts, traffic control, litter pick-up, and maintenance of roadside rests Graffiti removal and minor repairs to and cleaning of roadside markers Operating and maintaining various light equipment and performing general labor tasks associated with the maintenance of the State Highway system Working Conditions Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. The workweek is normally 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, with scheduling at the discretion of Region Management. The employee may be scheduled to work night shifts, scheduled, or emergency overtime to meet operational needs, including storms, callbacks, or special work projects. Nights, holidays, weekends, temporary, and intermittent work shifts may also be required, and the employee may be loaned to other cost centers. Personal safety requirements (as per Injury and Illness Prevention Program): Appropriate footwear, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn. Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest, is to be worn over non‑safety shirts or coats. Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs. Provided safety gear; hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the department (white coveralls for night work). Minimum Requirements A drug screening must be passed prior to hire. A valid Class C Driver’s License is required. Work must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification(s).
