Job Title: CNC Lathe/Mill Machine Operator Job Description

This role operates CNC and hybrid CNC/manual lathes to produce high-precision parts under tight tolerances. The CNC Lathe/Mill Machine Operator works independently on pre-programmed machines, performs setups and tooling changes, and ensures all parts meet specifications outlined in work instructions and blueprints.

Responsibilities

• Operate CNC lathes and hybrid CNC/manual lathes (including models such as L250-2-E and Proteract 1630 SLX) independently to produce precision parts.

• Run pre-programmed CNC machines and monitor operations to ensure parts meet all specifications and quality standards.

• Perform machine setups, including installing and changing out tooling, adjusting machine offsets, and preparing fixtures as required.

• Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine machining operations, dimensions, and tolerances.

• Produce parts directly from blueprints, ensuring adherence to high-precision and tight tolerance requirements.

• Use manual bandsaws to cut raw material to size prior to starting the machining process.

• Load and unload parts into pre-programmed CNC mills and lathes in a safe and efficient manner.

• Use hand tools on machined parts when needed, including deburring metal parts after machining to remove sharp edges and burrs.

• Inspect parts using a CMM machine and precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers to verify dimensional accuracy.

• Adjust machine controls, tool offsets, and programs (including basic G-code edits) as needed to maintain part quality and consistency.

• Maintain consistent production of repeat parts that vary in size while meeting very tight tolerance requirements.

• Perform basic maintenance and housekeeping on machines and work area to support safe and efficient operations.

• Complete all required documentation and follow work instructions and quality procedures.

• Perform other tasks as assigned to support production and overall shop operations.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience in CNC machine operation and setup.

• Proficiency in operating CNC lathes and CNC mills, including setup and basic troubleshooting.

• Ability to interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings.

• Demonstrated ability to machine parts under very tight tolerances and high-precision requirements.

• Experience performing machine setups, including tooling changes and adjustments to machine controls.

• Ability to perform quality inspections using a CMM machine.

• Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers.

• Familiarity with G-code and the ability to make basic program edits as needed.

• Experience operating manual lathes and bandsaws in a machining environment.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate parts.

• Ability to work independently, follow work instructions, and manage multiple tasks within a production schedule.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience operating an Okuma lathe is a plus.

• Experience deburring metal parts and finishing machined components.

• Comfort working with machine controls and adjusting settings to maintain part quality.

• Solid understanding of general machining practices and shop safety.

• Ability to adapt to different part sizes and configurations while maintaining tight tolerances.

Work Environment

This position operates in a machining and manufacturing facility with CNC lathes, hybrid CNC/manual lathes, CNC mills, manual lathes, bandsaws, and precision inspection equipment such as CMM machines, micrometers, and calipers. The majority of parts produced are repeat jobs that vary significantly in size and require very tight tolerances and high precision. Two primary shift options are available: a first shift running Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and a weekend night shift running Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., which includes a 15% shift differential. Both shifts include a half-hour unpaid lunch. The environment emphasizes safe machine operation, adherence to work instructions, and maintaining an organized, clean work area while working around production machinery and metal materials.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Thornton, CO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $29.90/hr.
