Project Specialist

Job Duties/Scope Of Work Edit and refine HMIS, HFO, and One Hanford communications products, ensuring clarity, accuracy, consistency, adherence to AP Style, and alignment with organizational standards. Translate complex technical and operational information into clear, concise content for diverse audiences, working directly with subject matter experts to validate accuracy, fill gaps, and strengthen messaging. Develop, edit, and produce written and visual communications materials including fact sheets, presentations, executive briefings, web content, infographics, signage, and other digital or print products. Provide copyediting, proofreading, graphic layout, and basic design support, applying established branding and visual identity requirements. Support creation of multimedia products by assisting with script development, storyboarding, production coordination, and collaboration with photographers, videographers, and other creative specialists. Coordinate communications projects from concept through review, approval, and final production; manage multiple deadlines, requirements, and customer needs. Gather information from SMEs and customers to define deliverables and produce accurate, effective communications aligned with HMIS, HFO, and One Hanford priorities. Maintain awareness of Hanford mission activities to provide informed communication support and consistent messaging across related products. Build productive working relationships with HMIS organizations, HFO personnel, contractors, and technical experts while delivering responsive customer service and managing scope. Exercise independent judgment to resolve editorial and production issues, forecast resource needs, and support broader communications and enterprise initiatives. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree plus five years of relevant experience in technical editing, technical writing, communications, journalism, public relations, multimedia communications or project management OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated professional writing, editing and proofreading experience. Experience editing technical or complex subject matter for clarity and readability. Working knowledge of Associated Press Style and professional editorial standards. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical subject matter experts and nontechnical audiences. Strong organizational and project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across organizations and disciplines. Ability to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential badge. Desired Qualifications Experience supporting technical, engineering, scientific, environmental, government or highly regulated organizations. Experience developing executive-level presentations, briefing materials or communications products. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud or comparable graphic design and multimedia tools. Experience with photography, video production, audio production or multimedia storytelling. Experience developing graphics, infographics, fact sheets or other visual communications products. Familiarity with federal government communications or Department of Energy programs. Experience coordinating products through formal review and approval processes. A candidate's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions. The salary range listed represents the full range of salary that may be offered. This position may be required to complete a probationary period. Benefits for eligible employees will begin on day one. In compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Field Office (HFO) direction, employees issued initial badges on or after September 1st, 2025, are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a federal background check investigation. This investigation encompasses multiple areas of eligibility and includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
