Job Summary The goal of the Research Pharmacy (RP) in the Department of Pharmacy Services at Michigan Medicine is to ensure that investigational drug studies and other drug related research at the Hospitals and Clinics are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. In doing so, the RP assists investigators in complying with the requirements of the FDA, study sponsors, Michigan State Board of Pharmacy Regulations, The Joint Commission standards and requirements, and hospital and pharmacy policies. General Pharmacy Technician Duties May Include Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticals Prepare sterile products, injections and IV chemotherapy Fill automated dispensing cabinets on nursing units Correctly distribute and account for controlled substances usage Deliver medications to nursing units including surgical rooms Stock medications shelves, manage inventory dating, return excess stock to inventory, properly dispose expired medications or return to manufacturer Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols Respond and triage telephone and electronic message inquiries Assist the Pharmacist with auditing controlled substance utilization Complete restocking and dispensing activities using pharmacy automation Receive orders and prepare and package medications for outside clinics Build various medication kits, providing support to many different professions Conduct admission medication histories Assist the pharmacist in resuscitation bays Performing pharmacy cleaning and documentation Assist with training of staff Other duties and special projects as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications Work in a highly collaborative environment including Pharmacists, Pharmacy Managers, Technician Supervisors, and other medical professionals Required Qualifications Pharmacy Technician Senior Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires. One or more years of relevant pharmacy experience. Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills. This position requires primary source verification Desired Qualifications At least one year of technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable. Basic algebra including performing pharmacy calculations is also highly desired. Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability: Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English. Why Work at Michigan? The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed. Please visit the Michigan LARA website for more information about Pharmacy Technician licensing: Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.
