ATHLETIC COACH

Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff through performance of the Head Coach role over and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher. Reports to the school principal and athletic director. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Thorough knowledge of all Athletic Policies approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education and responsible for implementation across the sports program. Understand and interpret existing school system, state, and conference regulations; implement consistently and advise staff. Understand proper administrative line of command and refer grievance requests through appropriate channels. Maintain attendance at all relevant meetings that require staff participation. Establish and communicate fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to staff; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to reinforce program goals. Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance per local policy. Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end evaluate staff effectiveness. Maintain discipline, address grievances, and promote morale and cooperation. Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events. Prepare for scheduled sport events and practices, adhere to facility times, and coordinate with maintenance and school employees. Provide documentation to meet state and system requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Safeguard equipment and recommend policy or procedural changes. Communicate sport‑specific training rules and regulations to each participant. Monitor student athlete grades and conduct. Attend all practices and games; provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards. Initiate programs and policies for injury, medical attention, and emergencies; submit required paperwork within 24 hours. Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Establish discipline protocols, enforce due process, and communicate with parents as needed. Assist athletes in college and advanced educational selection. Participate in budgeting with the Athletic Director, recommending equipment specifications and maintaining expenditures within budget. Accountable for all equipment, collect fees for lost/unreturned items, manage storage, reconditioning, and submit inventory reports. Ensure equipment is properly labeled and accessible. Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices, controlling access and requisition. Authorize athletes to remain only in authorized areas at appropriate times. Check locker rooms before and after practice, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of sport equipment. Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks, especially when custodians are not on duty. Instill respect for equipment and property; organize pre‑season meetings. Recruit athletes not involved in other sports; promote the sport within the school and community. Maintain quality of any media releases; foster positive public relations with media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Present information to media about schedules, tournaments, and results. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal in accordance with Board and Statute policy. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must possess strong administrative and organizational skills; thorough knowledge of the Catawba County Schools athletic policy and the North Carolina Administrative Code. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community. Minimum Training and Experience Must meet requirements set by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Catawba County Board of Education, and school administration. Teacher license and employment as a teacher by the Catawba County Board of Education is strongly preferred. Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
