The Parish Bookkeeper is responsible for accurately recording, organizing, and maintaining the Parish financial and payroll transactions, ensuring compliance, and supporting Parish decision-making. The position reports to the Parish Operations Manager and works collaboratively with the Parish Treasurer.

** Bookkeeper Duties and Responsibilities: **

• Month-end and Year-end Accounting

− Operate the Shelby Financial System to perform all necessary financial/accounting processes

− Review/record all financial transactions including income, purchases, and payments

− Reconcile bank statements to verify accuracy and detect potential discrepancies

− Enter month-end/year-end General Ledger journal entry transactions as required

− Produce monthly financial statements including profit/loss, balance sheet, and budget reports

− Analyze financial data and prepare monthly financial summary for Parish Treasurer

• Payroll Processing

− Update employee data in payroll system to calculate employee wages and tax withholdings

− Perform semi-monthly payroll processing for payment of clergy and office staff

− Perform monthly payroll processing for payment of School staff

• Budgeting Support

− Prepare all historical data as needed to support annual budget process

− Assist Parish Treasurer in developing annual budget for Parish Council review/approval

• Record Maintenance

− Prepare/organize all financial and payroll documents/data for internal and external audits

• Other

− Other duties assigned by Parish Treasurer, Parish Operations Manager, and/or Parish clergy

− Maintain compliance with financial reporting regulations and Generally Accepted Accounting

Principles (GAAP)

** Bookkeeper Skills and Qualifications **

• Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting

• Experience in using accounting software to enter transactions and produce financial reports

• Strong analytical and organizational skills

• Self-motivated and self-directed

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel)

• Three to five years of experience in management, accounting, finance, or related field

• Working knowledge of Shelby Financial System (preferred but not required)

• Bachelor degree in accounting, business admin, or related field (preferred but not required)

• Working experience with Greek Orthodox churches or other faith-based organizations (preferred)
