Job Title: Manufacturing Zone Engineer

Job Description

The Manufacturing Zone Engineer oversees approximately 30 workstations within a defined area of General Assembly and program manages all equipment introduced into that zone. This role ensures accurate floor layouts, supports operators in learning and using new equipment, resolves processing issues, and develops material flow strategies. The engineer also leads automation design and buyoff activities and manages supplier relationships related to tooling and equipment for their zone.

Responsibilities

• Program manage all new equipment and automation introduced into the assigned General Assembly zone, covering roughly 30 workstations.
• Collaborate with design teams to ensure the floor layout within the zone is accurate, efficient, and aligned with manufacturing requirements.
• Work closely with line operators to educate and train them on the proper operation and use of new equipment and tooling.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve processing issues within the zone to maintain safe, efficient, and high-quality production.
• Develop and refine material flow strategies for the zone to optimize throughput, reduce bottlenecks, and support lean manufacturing practices.
• Lead automation design and buyoff activities, ensuring equipment and tooling meet performance, safety, and quality standards before full implementation.
• Manage suppliers for tooling and equipment, including coordination of deliveries, installation, qualification, and ongoing support.
• Qualify tooling and machinery, performing tooling buyoff activities to verify functionality, reliability, and compliance with specifications.
• Communicate effectively and work cross-functionally with engineering teams, unionized workforce, leadership, and supplier partners to align on objectives and resolve issues.
• Support plant manufacturing operations as needed, providing technical guidance and hands-on support in the zone.

Essential Skills

• 3–5 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer with direct responsibility for tooling buyoff and qualifying tooling and machinery.
• 3–5 years of experience in plant manufacturing environments.
• Proven experience managing suppliers for tooling and equipment, including buyoff and qualification activities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering teams, unionized workforce, leadership, and suppliers.
• Ability to work on-site in a manufacturing plant environment on an as-needed basis.
• Hands-on experience with manufacturing engineering and tooling.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Automotive program management experience.
• Prior experience working within large automotive OEM manufacturing environments.
• Experience with unionized (UAW) production facilities.
• Minimum of 3 years performing automation or equipment-related work within assembly line or construction settings.

This is a Contract position based out of Lake Orion, MI.

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Lake Orion,MI.
