Job Summary At the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is seeking a Safety Consultant (OSHPRO 3) to join its Consultation Program. The consultant will use expertise in construction, trades, or industry safety to help businesses identify hazards, strengthen safety programs, and comply with WISHA and OSHA standards. This role offers flexible scheduling and periodic telework, with the primary duty station in Tacoma, WA. Responsibilities Conduct on‑site workplace consultations across a variety of industries, from construction and manufacturing to small‑business operations. Evaluate work environments, identify safety and health hazards, and recommend practical, effective solutions. Collaborate with employers to develop written safety programs and ensure compliance with WISHA/OSHA standards. Deliver training, workshops, and outreach presentations to improve workplace safety culture. Promote DOSH Consultation services at trade shows, industry events, and through direct outreach. Assist in developing and maintaining client records and reports. Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent must travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state‑issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV). Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate. Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain, and must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear. Qualifications Required: A valid and unrestricted driver’s license The ability to learn and grow The ability to meet the needs of others And one of the following: Three years as a Labor & Industries Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or engineering field AND three years of experience as a safety & health officer, consultant, or related role. Master’s degree in a related field AND one year of experience as a safety & health manager or related role. Four years of full‑time, journey‑level experience in a relevant industry AND three years of experience as a safety & health manager or related role. Desired Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Demonstrated leadership in accident investigations, inspections, and regulatory enforcement Strong communication and conflict resolution skills when working with employers, unions, and legal teams Bilingual preferred; a 5% salary increase for dual‑language responsibilities.
