This position will focus on overall animal care and welfare, successful animal surgery completion, training of new staff, recordkeeping, and procedural duties. The person in this role will need to feel passionate about working with animals, enjoy and excel at organization, and support and maintain a clean, safe and compliant working environment. We are seeking someone that is hardworking, shows attention to detail, takes initiative, has a teamwork mentality and positive attitude.Primary ways the Surgical Technician II will contribute to the team:Cares for animals including feeding, cleaning and surgery support responsibilitiesFollows protocol to ensure the health and welfare of the animals in careSurgery support tasks including preparation of surgical instruments and supplies for surgeons' use, operate the autoclaves, calibration of animal weight scales, disinfecting surgery equipment, transfer of animals, and weighing animalsSuccessfully performs rodent catheterization and soft tissue removal surgeriesWorks with managers in the development of new surgical modelsWorks with managers in the implementation of new and better surgical techniquesTrains new Support Technicians and SurgeonsSuggests improvements to work instructions in accordance with the 3 Rs (Refine, Replace and Reduce)Inventory control of drugs, including checking expirations dates, calculating concentrations of drugs, accurately maintaining and daily review of the inventory of controlled drugsCoordinates order details to include selection, packaging and confirming accuracyKeeps accurate records of feeding, cleaning and care of animalsAnimal anesthesia, prep, and post-operative care of surgical animalsEnsures animal welfare, with IACUC and quality standards is met within area of responsibility, which includes compliance to work proceduresAll other duties as assignedWe are looking for the following from the Surgical Technician II:Desire to work with and care for animals on a daily basisInterest in animal surgery and careContinuous effort toward contributing to a clean and safe working environmentAbility and willingness to complete paperwork as neededMust be available to work weekends/ holidays on a rotating basisWillingness to work overtime when neededMinimum, 2 year degree in animal science; pertinent work experience (such as laboratory, veterinary or surgical experience) may be substituted for education.Ability to understand the written company standards and verbal instructions in English.Basic math skills.Respect for animal welfare.Ability to work in a team atmosphere.Leadership skillsAdherence to the company domestic pet policy and biosecurity.This position requires that the Surgical Technician II be able to:Lift up to 50lbs on occasion.Stand/walk on concrete for at least 2 hours at a time.Frequently bend, reach, push, pull, squat and lift.Ability to read, write, and speak English.Salary will be commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
