About the Position

# Job Opportunity – Surgical / Medical-Surgical Stepdown Registered Nurse – North Carolina

Start Date: November 2026

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina

Compensation: Details provided to qualified applicants

Schedule: 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend required, 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio for surgical and medical inpatient patients

Highlights:

• Combination acuity unit caring for adult medical-surgical and surgical stepdown patients
• Diverse case mix including trauma patients (GSW, MVA, stabbings, falls) and surgical patients requiring various procedures from cholecystectomy to amputations
• Epic charting system with comprehensive interdisciplinary support including IV teams, respiratory services, rapid response teams, and pharmacy
• 13-26 week contract assignments available with up to 7 days pre-approved time off
• 24 hours of floor orientation following 2 days of hospital orientation
• Floating to similar units as needed; must be able to work during catastrophic events or disasters as part of Storm/Hurricane Team

Requirements:

• Minimum 2 years of surgical unit experience required
• Active North Carolina or Compact RN license
• BLS, ACLS, and NIH certifications required
• Must pass EKG testing prior to start date
• Required skills: Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, use of Rapid Response Teams, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care/management, surgical drain management, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, and wound care/wound vac
• Proficiency with BiPAP/CPAP, feeding tube care, heparin protocols, high flow nasal cannula, PCA, PICC line management, and IV initiation/maintenance
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions considered)
• Travel experience preferred but not required; local candidates accepted

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
• Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
• Previous charge experience
• Trauma Level II experience

Patient Population & Procedures:

Care for a wide range of adult surgical and trauma patients with diagnoses including cellulitis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, various cancers, bowel obstruction, peripheral vascular disease, and trauma-related injuries. Unit performs comprehensive surgical procedures including appendectomy, hernia repair, TURP, ostomy creation/closure, wound debridement, tumor removal, and amputations.

Special Equipment:

Experience with wound vacs, chest tubes, NG tubes/Corpak, JP drains, Hemovac drains, and Penrose drains required.
