Protective Services & Investigative Specialist

Overview We are seeking an experienced Protective Services Professional to provide executive protection and transportation for the Director of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and visiting dignitaries, while conducting independent security‑related investigations and supporting the Protective Security Group. Responsibilities Provide executive protection and transportation for the Director and visiting dignitaries, including threat analysis, advance preparation, security strategy development, and route planning. Conduct comprehensive and impartial investigations, including personnel, policy compliance, threat assessments, and criminal investigations. Collaborate with the training manager to develop entry‑level and in‑service training activities for the Protective Security Group. Assist the Senior Security Manager with special projects and events at APL. Work as part of a team of security professionals providing armed security presence and response capabilities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field (equivalent education and experience acceptable). Minimum of 10 years experience as a certified law‑enforcement officer in a local, state, or federal agency, separated in good standing. Unrestricted State of Maryland handgun permit (or eligibility to obtain one). Experience in executive or dignitary protection and transportation; knowledge of defensive tactics. Experience conducting comprehensive criminal, personnel, and/or administrative investigations. Record of professional conduct, ability to work independently, and leadership skills. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Excellent customer‑service orientation; ability to manage staff and interact with all levels of Laboratory personnel and external stakeholders. Strong organizational, planning, problem‑solving, and negotiation abilities. English proficiency for job tasks and report writing. Proficiency with computers and security‑related software. Valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license in good standing. Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance by start date and ultimately Top Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required. Ability to pass a pre‑employment physical exam. Willingness to adjust working hours to accommodate executive protection schedules. Preferred Qualifications Experience as a trainer in a law enforcement or security environment. Experience with special weapons and tactics. Completion of executive protection training.
