LPN Psychiatric

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Montana State Hospital provides skilled nursing care, assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluations for adult clients in a psychiatric and therapeutic environment. The role involves supervising and accounting for patients, delivering care as directed by medical and nursing providers, and using therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques. The LPN must have experience with mental health, developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric disorders and demonstrate strong documentation and patient assessment skills. Responsibilities:

• Perform patient assessments and document physical, emotional, and behavioral status.
• Implement appropriate nursing care interventions under supervision.
• Observe, report, and maintain accurate patient records.
• Provide care and support to patients in a therapeutic environment.
• Use therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques effectively.
• Maintain and protect patient rights and confidentiality.
• Utilize nursing instruments and equipment proficiently.
• Collaborate with medical and nursing providers to support patient care plans.
• Adhere to facility policies and procedures related to psychiatric care.
• Participate in shift handovers and communicate patient status changes.

• Graduation from an accredited practical nursing program.
• Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of Montana or compact license.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant nursing experience, preferably in psychiatric, mental health, or behavioral care settings.
• Ability to perform patient assessments and document findings accurately.
• Knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychiatric nursing care.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with patient care information systems and technology.

• Experience providing care to individuals with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric disorders.
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification.
• At least 1 year of contract nursing experience.
• Experience working with ID patients, Autism Spectrum, or Adult Psychiatric populations.

• Shift differential may be available.
• One meal provided per shift.
• Ability to work flexible schedules and locations including Warm Springs and Grasslands campuses.
• Must be willing to relocate to Montana if not local.
• Therapeutic environment requiring use of de-escalation techniques and patient rights protection.

• 12-hour shifts, primarily 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
• Shift assignments may require flexibility and facility scheduling compliance.
• Start date expected on or after 11/02/2026 with assignment ending 05/01/2027.
