Job Title: Level 1 CNC Machine Operator Job Description

This role operates CNC machines in a clean, modern machine shop environment, focusing on producing precision metal components to exact specifications. You will work with vertical mills and multiple machines at a time, using technical drawings and precision measuring tools to ensure high-quality, accurate parts.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to understand job requirements and specifications.
• Start, monitor, and observe CNC machine operations to ensure proper performance throughout the production run.
• Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, and depth of cut.
• Perform process offset changes independently to maintain dimensional accuracy and part quality.
• Load parts using vice grips and other appropriate tools, ensuring secure and safe workholding.
• Operate vertical mills, including Haas and Brother machines, and manage multiple machines simultaneously when required.
• Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring devices to inspect and verify parts during and after machining.
• Verify conformance of completed work to specifications and tolerances, including working with close tolerances in the thousandths range.
• Set up jobs, including preparing the machine, tooling, and workholding, and run the first part to validate setup.
• Adjust CNC programs as needed within defined parameters to correct dimensional or quality issues.
• Apply lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as required to ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety and operational procedures in the machine shop.

Essential Skills

• 3–5+ years of industrial machine operating experience in a machine shop or similar environment.
• Hands-on experience operating CNC machines, including vertical mills and Level 1 CNC operation.
• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and blueprints.
• Proficiency in using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and other measuring devices.
• Lockout/tagout (LOTO) experience and adherence to safety procedures.
• Extensive machine shop and metalworking skills, including familiarity with machining processes.
• Ability to work with decimals and perform basic shop math for machining operations.
• Comfort working with close tolerances, including measurements in the thousandths of an inch.
• Capability to set up own jobs and run the first part with minimal supervision.
• Ability to adjust CNC programs when required to maintain part quality.
• Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
• Proficiency with machine operating practices, including loading parts using vice grips.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating Haas and Brother CNC machines.
• Comfort managing multiple machines at the same time in a production environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate parts.
• Ability to work effectively on swing or weekend shifts as part of a production team.
• Solid problem-solving skills to identify and correct machining issues during production.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean machine shop environment with a focus on CNC machining and metalworking. You will work primarily on vertical mills, including Haas and Brother machines, often operating multiple machines simultaneously. Available schedules include a day shift from Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm; a swing shift from Monday through Thursday, 3:30 pm to 2:00 am with a shift differential; and a weekend shift from Friday through Sunday, 6:00 am to 6:30 pm with a shift differential. The shop emphasizes safety, including the use of lockout/tagout procedures, and expects appropriate industrial attire suitable for a machining environment, such as sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for working around machinery.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tualatin, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $29.70/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
