The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is seeking candidates for the position of Vice President- Human Resources (HR) to lead the Conference office’s human resources function. Reporting to the Chief Operating & Business Officer, with a dotted-line relationship to the Chief Legal Officer, this position will serve as the ACC’s senior human resources professional and a trusted advisor to leadership, managers, and staff.
The Vice President, HR will lead the ACC’s comprehensive human resources function, with responsibility across the employee lifecycle, including benefits administration, recruiting and retention, onboarding and offboarding, performance management, compensation administration, employee relations, HR policies and compliance, payroll support, professional development, and employee engagement.
The role requires an experienced HR professional who can provide sound counsel while remaining hands-on in the administration and execution of the function. The Vice President- HR will be supported by strong external partners and will be expected to effectively leverage those resources to deliver an efficient, responsive, and high-quality HR function.
The ideal candidate will have broad human resources experience, sound judgment, a collaborative and engaging disposition, and a demonstrated ability to build trust and effectively support employees and leaders at all levels of an organization.
Requirements:Human Resources Leadership & Administration
- Lead and serve as the primary internal contact for the ACC’s human resources function, including HR practices, policies, procedures, systems, and employee-related matters.
- Maintain and regularly enhance HR policies and practices to support organizational objectives, consistency, compliance, and a positive employee experience.
- Own and maintain complete, accurate, and current employee information in the HRIS, including employee records, compensation, benefit elections, payroll deductions, and employment changes.
- Manage relationships with external HR consultants, benefits advisors, payroll providers, and other HR partners, and coordinate with employment counsel through the Chief Legal Officer.
- Proactively assess organizational and workforce needs, identify people-related risks and opportunities, and provide leadership with practical options and clear recommendations.
- Partner with Finance to support accurate and timely payroll administration, including employee data, compensation and benefit changes, deductions, and related documentation.
- Partner with leadership to strengthen organizational structure, role clarity, accountability, and alignment with the ACC’s strategic and operational priorities.
Benefits, Compensation & Compliance
- Lead administration of the ACC’s comprehensive employee benefits program, including annual enrollment, employee education, vendor relationships, and ongoing benefits support.
- Lead the development and administration of competitive and equitable compensation practices, including market benchmarking, position classifications, and related recommendations.
- Oversee retirement plan administration and compliance in partnership with external advisors.
- Administer employee leave programs and other applicable employment policies.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable employment laws and regulations and partner closely with the Chief Legal Officer to ensure compliance and appropriately manage employment-related risk.
Talent Acquisition & Employee Lifecycle
- Lead recruiting and talent acquisition processes in partnership with hiring managers, including position development, candidate sourcing and evaluation, offers, and related hiring processes.
- Manage and continuously improve employee onboarding and offboarding.
- Maintain current job descriptions and work with department leaders to ensure roles, responsibilities, and organizational needs remain appropriately aligned.
- Develop and manage internship and other early-career programs that support organizational needs and provide meaningful professional development opportunities.
- Support workforce planning, succession considerations, and other organizational talent needs.
Performance Management & Professional Development
- Lead the ACC’s annual performance management process.
- Partner with managers and employees to establish clear expectations and accountability.
- Develop and lead professional development, training, and educational opportunities for staff.
- Provide managers with resources to strengthen their effectiveness as people leaders.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen employee development, retention, and internal growth.
Employee Relations & Executive Counsel
- Serve as a trusted HR advisor to executive leadership, managers, and employees.
- Lead and manage employee relations matters, including performance issues, workplace complaints, and corrective actions, in a timely, fair, confidential, and professional manner.
- Provide counsel to managers regarding performance, employee development, workplace concerns, organizational changes, and other people-related matters.
- Partner closely with the Commissioner, Chief Operating & Business Officer, and Chief Legal Officer on sensitive personnel matters and significant employment decisions.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information.
Culture, Engagement & Staff Experience
- Partner with leadership and staff to support a collaborative, engaged, accountable, and high-performing workplace culture.
- Oversight of the Office Manager and related office operations and workplace administration.
- Coordinate employee engagement initiatives, professional development, volunteer and community engagement opportunities, staff events, and other initiatives supporting the employee experience.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen communication, connectivity, recognition, and collaboration.
- Help employees understand how their roles and responsibilities contribute to the ACC’s broader mission, priorities, and organizational goals.
- Regularly assess employee needs and identify practical opportunities to improve the staff experience and organizational effectiveness.
Qualifications, Skills, and Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human resource management, organizational development, business administration, or similar experience strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in human resource management to include benefits administration, performance management, payroll and professional development.
- Professional certificates (SHRM) and/or an advanced degree preferred.
- Proven ability to influence at all levels across the organization, including staff and constituents, and maintain confidentiality across highly sensitive matters.
- Proven experience in developing, implementing, and assessing staff training.
- Strong business acumen and understanding of legal labor matters.
- Excellent communication skills; high comfort level presenting at a leadership level; and can balance building trust, navigating challenging conversations, and staff relations.
- Demonstrated skills in problem identification and creative problem solving, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and analysis, organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and cultural humility.
- General computer literacy skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, and HR related software.
Work Environment:
- This position typically operates in an office setting but occasionally at indoor and outdoor venues including stadiums, arenas, and fields. Additionally, please note the following:
- Ability to remain standing/walking for up to 4 hours.
- Abiliiy to remain sitting for up to 8 hours at a desk or computer.
- Due to the nature of the ACC’s business, travel may occur to multiple sites as dictated by major and minor event schedules.
- Due to the nature of events indoors and outdoors, you must be able to endure varying weather conditions including wind, rain, and high and low temperatures.
- Understanding that due to the nature of our business, working hours can include working nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
