Purchasing Specialist

We are seeking a Purchasing Specialist to oversee purchasing and order coordination for a building materials distribution operation. This individual will be responsible for ensuring materials are ordered accurately, arrive on time, and are available to support customer and sales needs. The Purchasing Specialist will work closely with vendors, sales, inventory, transportation, and accounting while managing purchase orders, special orders, delivery timelines, and any issues that could impact customer orders.

• Manage purchasing of resale and distributed products, including building materials, supplies, and related products.
• Stay on top of sales orders and ensure required materials are ordered and delivered within expected timelines.
• Create, track, and manage purchase orders from placement through receipt.
• Coordinate special-order materials requested by the sales team and communicate pricing, availability, and lead times.
• Work directly with vendors to confirm product availability, pricing, order status, and delivery schedules.
• Coordinate transportation and freight for incoming materials, including LTL, flatbed, and other specialized shipments.
• Troubleshoot transportation delays, shipping issues, shortages, damaged materials, and incorrect orders.
• Monitor inventory needs and work with internal teams to maintain appropriate stock levels.
• Obtain competitive pricing and freight rates while helping manage overall purchasing costs.
• Maintain accurate purchasing and order information within the ERP system.
• Communicate proactively with sales regarding order status, delays, special orders, and changing delivery timelines.
• Partner with sales, inventory, operations, and accounting to resolve purchasing, billing, and order-related issues.

• 35+ years of purchasing experience
• Experience with purchasing of raw materials, ideally masonry, but open to other areas such as electrical and metals.
• ERP experience
• Logistics and procurement knowledge
• Experience in supply chain management
• Proficiency in purchase order management
• SAP system experience
• Inventory and MRP planning experience

• College degree preferred
• Buying experience

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, either 7 AM to 4 PM or 8 AM to 5 PM, totaling 40-42 hours per week, with the potential to extend to 50 hours during summer months. No weekend work is required. The organization is family-owned, offering significant opportunities for growth and increased responsibilities. Upon conversion to a permanent position, there is a potential pay rate increase. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of FISHKILL, NY.

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $38.46/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
