Accountant HBC Engineering Company is seeking a full-time Accountant to support the financial operations of a Florida-based engineering consulting firm. This role is a good fit for a detail-oriented accounting professional with experience in project-based billing, government contracting, or professional services. Job Summary The Accountant provides accounting and financial support for HBC's operations across project billing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, and financial reporting. Working closely with project managers, leadership, and external consultants, this position helps maintain accurate records, compliance, and timely reporting across a multi-project engineering environment. Key Responsibilities Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, including invoice processing, vendor payments, and client billing Prepare and process project invoices in coordination with project managers, ensuring accuracy against contract terms and billing schedules Support payroll processing and coordinate with HR on time-tracking, benefits deductions, and labor cost allocations Maintain general ledger entries, bank reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close processes Assist with the preparation of financial statements, budget reports, cash flow analyses, and management summaries Monitor project budgets and expenditures, flagging variances and supporting project financial reporting to leadership Support compliance with government contracting requirements including FAR overhead rate calculations, indirect cost tracking, and audit preparation Coordinate with external auditors, CPAs, and tax preparers as needed Maintain organized financial records and documentation in accordance with firm policies and regulatory requirements Identify process improvement opportunities and support the implementation of accounting best practices as the firm scales Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CPA candidacy is a plus 2 or more years of accounting experience; experience in engineering, architecture, construction, or government contracting is preferred Familiarity with project-based accounting, cost accounting, and multi-phase billing in a professional services environment Knowledge of FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) overhead compliance and indirect cost rate structures is a strong plus Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Deltek, or similar platforms; proficiency with Microsoft Excel required Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines Effective communication skills with the ability to work across technical, administrative, and leadership teams Discretion and professionalism in handling confidential financial and personnel information Ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and elevate issues proactively Benefits Paid time off (vacation, personal, and sick days) Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) match program Life insurance and supplemental coverage Professional development and licensure support Mentorship and career growth opportunities Equal Opportunity Employer.
