Custodian

Custodian Position

Custodian will be responsible for cleaning the building, removing debris, and keeping all areas of the school neat and tidy. General tasks include: vacuum and buff floors, shampoo carpets, empty trash receptacles, and replace lining of trash cans. Candidate should possess a knowledge of, or willingness to learn, proper cleaning techniques, and must be able to take direction but also show initiative, work with little supervision or instruction, understand what needs to be done without constant follow-up, use good time management skills, have good interpersonal skills, and demonstrate respect for Christian values, other employees, students, parents and leadership.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• General
  • Manage inventory of cleaning and maintenance items
  • Maintain janitor office and closets in a clean, organized and safe manner
• Janitorial
  • Cleaning and sanitizing floors and baseboards by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors or fixtures
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms
  • Trash removal from classrooms, administrative offices and outside receptacles
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, etc. to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings
  • Clear debris from grounds
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snow blowers and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals
  • General cleaning, dusting, and vacuuming (cleaning spills, unexpected messes, etc)
  • Identify and report possible repairs.
  • Other routine maintenance duties as assigned
• Communication
  • Notify manager concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Notify manager of need for supplies and equipment for cleaning duties

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Positive attitude
• Six months or more related experience - basic knowledge of cleaning products
• Annual Asbestos Training/Certification
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to prioritize multiple tasks
• Ability to work effectively with a team and independently as needed to support the group effort
• Sensitivity to the ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds of the student body
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Effectively communicate with students, parents, school staff, and others in a calm and respectful manner at all times
