Graphic Design Apprentice

This temporary, part-time Graphic Design Apprentice opportunity is based onsite in San Francisco at the de Young Museum. Over a five-month apprenticeship (January 5 to June 4, 2027), the selected apprentice will support the Museum’s Graphic Design department on museum design projects, collaborating across teams and contributing to brand, typography, and design workflows. Role Overview The apprentice will partner with the Museum Design Studio and assist on large-scale initiatives spanning multiple formats. Work includes applying visual identity guidelines, developing visual communications for museum initiatives, and participating in concept development, review, iteration, and production deliverables. Responsibilities Collaborate with the Museum Design Studio and act as a creative partner to other departments on large-scale projects using a range of media, including print communications, environmental graphics, outdoor media, mobile and online media, and wayfinding or signage. Research, conceptualize, and design visual communications that support museum initiatives. Scale the museum brand consistently and effectively according to established identity guidelines. Apply strong typography skills across all projects. Present concepts and design decisions, including rationale, to designers and non-designers, incorporate feedback, and carry designs through iterative revisions while adapting to collaborator needs. Meet with internal clients to plan scope and schedule for individual projects; communicate deadlines, schedules, and production details to relevant museum departments; attend project meetings as a department representative. Schedule, bid, produce, and deliver projects within established budgets and timelines while maintaining museum-quality standards. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High School Diploma/GED, with pursuit of further education in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. Solid understanding of visual design principles and typography. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Passion for research and design trends.Ability to take initiative, work independently, and collaborate with others. Excellent organization and time management skills. Understanding of human-centered design and accessibility standards. Technology Adobe Creative Suite Schedule and Location Location: Onsite in San Francisco, CA at the de Young Museum (Golden Gate Park). Work pattern: 7 hours per day, 21 hours per week, 3 days per week (Monday-Friday). Duration: 5-month temporary apprenticeship, January 5 to June 4, 2027. Compensation Pay rate: $28 per hour.
