Seeking Teaching Artists for Pre-K Shakespeare Classes ShakesPre-K introduces children ages 2–5 to classic stories like A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo & Juliet through puppetry, music, tactile exploration, and imaginative play. We are currently hiring Teaching Artists for classes running September through November, while also expanding our roster of instructors and on-call substitutes for future programming. Classes generally take place on weekday mornings and afternoons at partner preschools throughout Manhattan. Current locations include Washington Heights, the Upper West Side, and the Upper East Side, with additional locations expected in the coming months. Formal teaching credentials are not required. We welcome applicants with backgrounds in theatre, education, childcare, or other experience working with young children. Curiosity, patience, reliability, and a playful spirit are essential. Our curriculum distills Shakespeare's plays into interactive 50-minute lessons. Each class includes: Physical, vocal, and imaginative warm-ups Introduction to American Sign Language vocabulary A puppet-theatre adaptation of a Shakespeare story Guided tactile exploration and supervised imaginative play Welcome, farewell, and in-story songs accompanied by ukulele All lesson plans, teaching materials, and training are provided. Teaching Artists are expected to learn and faithfully deliver the curriculum while fostering a warm, energetic, and supportive classroom environment. Teaching Artists will operate in pairs, and a representative from the partner school is always present to provide classroom management and logistical support. Selected applicants must complete a background check and fingerprinting before teaching.
