Principal – Blind School (260003UA) Job Description Organization Ohio School for the Blind Work Location Ohio St School for the Blind, 5220 North High St, Columbus 43214 Primary Location United States of America - OHIO - Franklin County - Columbus Schedule Full-time Compensation Commensurate with education and experience Primary Job Skill Education Technical Skills Education, Executive Leadership Agency Overview In 1837, the Ohio government established the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind. This institution was the predecessor of the Ohio State School for the Blind. It was the first public school for the blind in the United States. Today, more than 100 Ohio blind and visually impaired students receive their education each year at OSSB. Job Description Serves as an unclassified employee pursuant to Section 3301.13 O.R.C. and performs educational and/or research duties. Purpose Provides administrative supervision and educational leadership in the K‑12 academic program, extracurricular duties, student activities, and support services. Responsibilities Fosters and ensures the education program of the school by developing and implementing policies, programs, and schedules of classes; supervising educational programming and support services; facilitating the administration and submission of Ohio's statewide tests for students and local measures; developing a systematic approach to ordering teaching materials, supplies, and equipment; directing daily management of the school, including K through grade 12 and support services; addressing behavioral needs of students including Code of Conduct violations; promoting the acquisition and understanding of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) and its benefits; overseeing IEP development and ETRs. Maintains teaching and support staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining teachers and instructional aides in accordance with ODBES policies and procedures and state requirements; assisting in the planning, monitoring, and appraisal of job results; recruiting, selecting, providing orientation and training for teachers and support staff; completing probationary and annual performance evaluations for direct reports; observing classrooms following OSSB's framework for implementing the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System; planning professional development for teachers, aides, and clerical staff; and approving staff development activities. Help contributes to OSSB's effectiveness by identifying short and long‑term issues, researching and disseminating pertinent information, establishing cooperative partnerships with community agencies, business partners, or PSA; addressing parental concerns, answering questions, reporting on academic progress, and ensuring EMIS compliance; serving as a member of the Superintendent's administrative team; communicating and problem‑solving with other OSSB departments; addressing health and safety concerns; attending extracurricular activities on weekends and evenings; contributing to school‑wide efforts to improve written and electronic communications; applying student test analysis to inform instruction; ensuring accurate student transcripts and approving releases; and participating on the Strategic Planning Committee. Identifies current and future education requirements by establishing relationships with universities, local school districts, community and business leaders, and students; serving as a point of contact and resource for Educational Administrators statewide; surveying operational and educational conditions; recommending and taking necessary actions to support identified needs and improvements; and participating in BAC. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional organizations (e.g., AER, AERO, POSB); staying abreast of educational programs in Ohio; keeping informed of Ohio's requirements for IEPs, ETRs, special education procedures, and collective bargaining agreements; submitting an annual plan to LPDC; participating in license requirements; leading faculty meetings, school committees, and professional development activities; developing a working knowledge of Ohio's requirements for coursework, common core standards, testing requirements, OAKS procedures, and OSSB policies; collaborating with the divisions of ODBES, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, the Office for Exceptional Children, OCALI, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, OCDBE and other agencies; and representing OSSB through participation on committees, advisory groups, professional conferences and other activities.
