Job Description - Cable Plant Supervisor (2603633) Cable Plant Supervisor Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume) Bachelor's degree. Three (3) years of experience in IT infrastructure, low-voltage cabling, telecommunications, or a related field. Experience in managing and coordinating end-to-end technical infrastructure implementation. Experience with cable termination. Experience managing projects. Basic understanding of structured cabling standards (copper and fiber) and network infrastructure. Management experience (the following may be considered: Managing projects, students, or contractors). Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas). Project Management Software. Preferred Qualifications: Additional years of experience in IT infrastructure, low-voltage cabling, telecommunications, or a related field. Experience with testing equipment (Fluke CableAnalyzer, EXFO). Experience with documentation software (Visio, AutoCAD, Excel). Experience with working with a support ticketing system and distribution of tasks. BICSI, Installer/Technician, or RCDD Certification. Experience in a higher education environment or a government entity. Brief Description of Duties: The Cable Plant Supervisor will learn to manage our complete physical cable plant infrastructure (ISP and OSP) across a multi-site, complex environment. Incumbent will gain hands‑on experience in project management, construction plan review, and cross‑functional coordination with our Networking, Telephony, and Audio‑Visual (AV) teams. Over time, the incumbent will be mentored in overseeing a blended workforce of internal union employees, IBEW Local 25 electricians, external contractors, and support staff, handling daily service workflows. The incumbent must possess basic hands‑on experience with cable termination, a strong desire to learn enterprise infrastructure management, and excellent communication skills. Service Delivery & Staff Management: Supervise and guide the support staff responsible for the ITSM (IT Service Management) workflow by providing leadership, supervision, mentoring, and technical expertise. Ensure the timely routing and resolution of daily work orders, oversee the accuracy of project documentation, and review material/labor estimations for upcoming cable plant work. Foster a collaborative team environment and ensure clear, effective communication among team members. Project Coordination & Support: Assist in managing end‑to‑end cable plant projects. Help coordinate project schedules, track daily progress, and ensure facility alterations and new designs stay on track. Act as a supporting liaison between construction teams and technology units (Networking, AV, Telephony) to help ensure all infrastructure needs are met during facility renovations and new builds. Site Surveying & Quality Control: Shadow senior staff on site walks to evaluate rack layouts, pathways, and conduit routing. Assist in enforcing Layer 1 testing protocols (OTDR, Fluke certification) and verifying that contractor work meets BICSI standards and local codes. Labor & Contractor Coordination: Work alongside leadership to coordinate daily tasks for internal union members, Local 25 electricians, and low‑voltage contractors. Learn the nuances of resource allocation, labor relations, and site safety protocols (OSHA, NEC). Procurement Assistance: Assist in preparing RFPs/RFQs for Architectural & Engineering (A&E) services and external vendors, learning the contract management process from the ground up. Documentation & Asset Tracking: Take ownership of cable plant documentation. Maintain structured labeling schemes (ANSI/TIA‑606), update cable schedules, and assist in drafting rack elevation drawings and CAD/Visio diagrams. Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission. Special Notes: This is a full‑time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program.
