About the Position The Maintenance Construction Manager oversees facilities maintenance and construction projects across the Fairfax, SciTech, and Mason Square campuses. The role manages the full project lifecycle—from initiation through completion—using both contracted providers and in‑house resources. Key responsibilities include project scheduling, budgeting, contract administration, quality control, and stakeholder coordination. Benefits Paid annual leave, holidays, sick leave, and two‑week winter break (subject to approval) Participate in free tuition up to 12 credit hours during the academic year and professional development Commuter Choice Transit Benefit Virginia Retirement System (Hybrid Plan) Patriot Perks discounts to restaurants, events, and more Health, dental, and vision coverage Tuition dependent benefit (restrictions apply) Responsibilities Planned Non‑Emergency Projects Supervise day‑to‑day planned, recurring projects at all campuses Oversee work of consultants, vendors, and contractors Coordinate contractors, in‑house assets, and building occupants Manage recurring and ad‑hoc projects efficiently Maintain project documentation and database Control project timelines to meet deadlines Track budgets and provide forecasting recommendations Act as liaison with outside agencies, inspectors, users, and contractors Ensure work meets workmanship standards, quality, and correct materials Present information and recommendations to senior management Prepare status reports and correspondence Emergency Response Projects Rapidly develop solutions and arrange contracted responses for emergencies (e.g., water/gas/sewer, HVAC, electrical, ADA equipment, broken glass, automatic doors) Work with contractors to define scope and verify estimates Authorize work once it meets emergency needs Ensure repairs restore safety and operational status quickly Keep management and facilities leadership updated on progress Inform building occupants of restoration timelines Projects and Contract Administration Maintain appropriate contracts and update them as required Support contract changes, approve change orders, and authorize financial transactions Assist with insurance claims; provide documentation to Risk Management Compile, analyze, and report data for planning Act as contract administrator for assigned contracts Create, file, and log field‑related reports, weekly updates, and inspections Monitor construction milestones and schedules Review pay requests and invoices; approve, correct, or reject Other Duties as Assigned Work additional or unusual hours as needed for deadlines or emergencies Report to work early, stay late, or work weekends when required Perform related duties such as snow removal during inclement weather Serve as “Essential Personnel” and attend emergencies, snow removal, and ground‑clearing tasks Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Journey license in at least one trade Typically 4 years of construction project planning, management, and oversight Substantial full‑time experience in facilities maintenance and projects Experience with modern, computerized work order and building monitoring systems Experience designing and controlling budgets and cash flow for projects Experience selecting, negotiating, and managing professional service contracts Knowledge of construction project management theory and engineering practice in a commercial building environment Knowledge of national, state, county, local, and university regulations relevant to construction projects Knowledge of managing multiple trades and facilities operations Knowledge of maintenance, operation, and replacement of building systems and equipment Proficiency in data compilation, analysis, and reporting Ability to read and analyze blueprints, construction plans, and specifications for higher education facilities Leadership ability to manage teams across multiple projects and maintain safety and quality standards Facilitation skills for meetings and group presentations Capacity to establish and maintain working relationships with governing officials, contractors, and end users Strong oral and written communication skills Strategic and tactical problem‑solving with sound judgment Time‑management skills to schedule operations efficiently Supervision, motivation, training, and evaluation of personnel Active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license meeting GMU requirements Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field Master’s license Professional Engineer (PE) license Typically 7 years of managing multi‑trade projects from inception to completion Instructions to Applicants Apply by completing the online application at Submit a resume and three professional references.
