CNC Turning Machinist — Lathe Specialist (Near Plymouth, MI)

As the CNC Turning Machinist on first shift, you’ll arrive to well-prepped work orders, review prints, and get hands-on with high-precision metal components. You’ll set up, verify, run, and refine CNC lathe operations—bringing tight-tolerance parts to life.

A Day in the Life

• Begin by reviewing engineering drawings and specs; confirm workholding, tooling, and material.
• Assist with setups: install chucks, collets, bushings, and other fixturing; load tooling and verify offsets.
• Run turning operations—boring, facing, grooving, threading, and related cycles—on CNC lathes.
• Edit programs at the control, fine-tune tool wear/geometry offsets, and adjust parameters to hold tolerance.
• Perform first-piece verification and in-process checks with micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges.
• Troubleshoot dimensional or surface finish issues and correct them to maintain accuracy and throughput.
• Swap worn inserts, complete routine preventive maintenance, and document production and quality data.
• Keep the cell clean, organized, and safe; follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements.

• Hands-on CNC lathe operation

• Blueprint and drawing interpretation
• Precision inspection using calibrated instruments

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• 3+ years of CNC machining experience with a focus on lathes
• Proficiency editing CNC code and dialing in tool offsets/compensation
• Ability to read engineering drawings and technical specifications
• Solid grasp of cutting tools, feeds/speeds, and workholding methods
• Comfort with micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges
• Applied math skills: geometry, trigonometry, fractions/decimals, tolerances
• Independent work style with high quality standards

Preferred Qualifications

• Setup experience and first-article/first-piece inspection
• Familiarity with AS9100 and ISO 14001 systems
• Preventive maintenance and troubleshooting background
• Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail
• Background in aerospace, defense, or precision manufacturing

Physical Requirements

• Lift up to 50 lbs
• Stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the shift
• Manual dexterity to safely operate machine tools and metrology equipment
• Ability to work safely in a manufacturing setting while using required PPE
• Sustain focus and attention to detail during repetitive operations
