Overview The Metropolitan Emergency Services Agency operates and manages the Division of Emergency Communications – 911 Center, the Division of Emergency Management, and the Division of Public Safety Communications technology infrastructure. The agency cultivates a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment to meet the needs of Indianapolis and Marion County citizens. Position Responsibilities Process emergency and non‑emergency calls received via telephone while remaining apprised of all Fire, EMS, or Police officials within the jurisdiction of the 911 Center for Marion County. Follow established policies, procedures, rules and regulations in handling emergency calls and incidents with a specific focus on the trained operational field of Fire, EMS, or Police operations within the 911 Center. Enter information accurately into CAD, VESTA, Map, EMSystem, Locution, and other systems used. Acquire and maintain necessary certifications as required by the division. Operate CAD, Motorola MC7500, Locution, EMSystem, VESTA Telephone, VESTA Mapping, recording, and monitoring devices. Maintain confidentiality at all times. Assist in directing calls to appropriate units and to other telecommunicators when training limits apply. Answer emergency and non‑emergency radio traffic, functioning as a critical part of every incident by ensuring procedures and protocols are followed. Assess incidents, determine necessary response, and summon supervisory assistance when needed. Shift assignment will vary; position reports to the Supervisor, Shift. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be 18 years of age or greater. Excellent hearing & eyesight, capable of manual keyboard entry and long periods of sitting at a workstation. Must pass a full‑scope background investigation, psychological and physical examinations. No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude. Must treat customers, face‑to‑face or telephonically, in a professional and courteous manner. Telecommunicator I, EMS, and Fire operations positions must acquire and maintain EMD certification, APCO PST1 (or department equivalent), and CPR certification within one year of hire. Must pass the Critical Assessment Test, all certification courses, and the MESA Communications training program. Must read maps, monitor road and weather conditions, and make necessary adjustments. Attention to detail and effective communication are required. Must work under extremely stressful conditions. The dispatch center operates 24/7, seven days a week, including holidays. Shift (early, middle, or late) is assigned based on agency needs. Working Conditions Essential functions are regularly performed in an office setting without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Employees hired or rehired after 1/1/2022 may choose the PERF Hybrid plan (3% + Pension) or the INPRS My Choice Retirement Savings plan (3% + 1% contribution). Employees hired or rehired between 1/1/2017 and 12/31/2021 are automatically enrolled in the PERF My Choice plan. Employees hired prior to 1/1/2017 remain on the PERF Hybrid plan.
