SUMMARY: Reporting to the Social Work Manager, the Social Worker LSW evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of psychosocial problems, applying individual clinical social work skills to assist patients and their families in resolving personal and environmental problems related to mental or physical illness. The Social Worker assigned to the inpatient units actively participates in the co‑management model along with unit leadership to support patient flow initiatives, adhering to NASW Code of Ethics and Brown University values of compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. RESPONSIBILITIES Consistently applies corporate values of respect, honesty, and fairness while pursuing excellence in improving the health status of the region through patient-friendly, geographically accessible, high-value services. Acts in accordance with Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Conducts bio‑psychosocial evaluations to eliminate barriers to treatment and discharge, enhancing patient health status and improving resource utilization. Provides consultation on patient background, psychosocial functioning, and needs to medical and support staff to plan comprehensive care programs, increasing treatment compliance and care coordination. Develops treatment plans, initiates clinical interventions using individual and group modalities, analyzes course and results to maximize health status and healthcare decision‑making. Documents social work activity in patients’ medical records per departmental standards. Participates as a team member in collaborative care rounds with other personnel and community agencies to improve care coordination and safely transition patients to communities and less restrictive settings. Educates patients and families on medical and social work recommendations to promote optimal functioning. Assesses advocacy needs and coordinates appropriate advocacy activities within the hospital and community, emphasizing client self‑determination to enhance social supports and community resources. Supervises and evaluates BSW/MSW candidates as part of the Department of Clinical Social Work Student program (must hold LICSW or have at least 5 years of relevant experience). Completes case‑related statistics and reports per departmental standards. Participates in hospital‑wide, departmental, and community studies, projects, and trainings to educate on psychosocial issues and identify service delivery barriers. Remains current on community resources and accesses them as needed. Maintains professional expertise through educational activities; attends training for specific clinical responsibilities. Pays attention to quality assurance activities per department, hospital, and The Joint Commission standards. Adheres to Brown University Health, hospital, and department policies to maintain a safe care environment and comply with all laws, regulations, and standards. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited graduate school and a current license from the State of RI Board of Social Work Licensure. Minimum licensure at Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) level; when eligible, must obtain Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) status. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care for patients considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns throughout the care process. EXPERIENCE Between six months and one year of clinical experience, preferably in a health or mental health setting with an emphasis on populations served in the assigned area. Training and experience necessary to address specific patient needs, including age, developmental stage, and cultural patterns of the populations served. Analytical and therapeutic skills to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, initiate therapy, and evaluate results. Ability to interact effectively with patients, families, medical staff, and outside agencies to provide services. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Works in a normal office environment with exposure to patient care. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Provides functional guidance to Social Work Interns and recommends pursuit of LICSW licensure.
