About the Role The Operations Section of King County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) invites applicants for the Scale Operator position. The Scale Operator manages point‑of‑sale operations at a King County Solid Waste facility, including processing customer fees, managing daily financial receipts, and securing funds according to established open/close procedures. The role focuses on delivering excellent customer service, educating the public on waste disposal rules and compliance, maintaining accurate transaction records, managing Scale House supply inventory, and handling emergency situations and system failures independently or collaboratively. Responsibilities Provide professional customer service to internal stakeholders (TSOs, Engineering, Electricians, Mechanics, RES, Communications, Internal Affairs) and external stakeholders, including public/vendors. Reconcile daily funds and receipts. Handle transactions using the Point of Sale system (10‑key on keyboard), including cash, credit cards, Apple Pay, and King County vouchers. Daily reporting of transactions (print receipts, send documents to leads at Bow Lake). Interact with customers, coworkers, vendors, and other departments to resolve issues and support organizational objectives. Maintain the Scale House supply inventory and perform routine equipment checks. Respond to emergencies and system failures in a fast‑paced environment. Qualifications Working knowledge of cash handling and transaction management (minimum 3 years preferred). Demonstrated customer service experience in fast‑paced, high‑volume environments (minimum 3 years preferred). 10‑key experience. Ability to work closely with diverse staff and customers in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner. Ability to work independently. Strong written and oral communication and organizational skills. Ability to travel in a timely manner to various work locations, including sites not served by public transportation; county vehicles may be available. Working Conditions Work location onsite with possible multiple locations within the same work week. Employees must reside in Washington state within reasonable distance to their King County work site. Remote work support available; employees receive a county‑issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with reliable internet. Work schedule: Regular part‑time Scale Operators assigned primarily to a 7/10 or 5/8 schedule; hours vary seasonally and by shift (Day, Swing, Graveyard). The Division is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Union representation: This position is represented by Teamsters 174.
