Senior Accountant

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, August 16 or until filled SALARY RANGE: $98,000-$130,266.79 per year, depending on experience THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION (RTC) OF WASHOE COUNTY, NEVADA, an integrated transportation agency that serves as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), transit authority, and street and highway construction agency invites applications for the position of Senior Accountant . Position Overview Under general supervision, this exempt position plays a key role in maintaining the agency's financial health by managing complex accounting functions, supporting audits, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. As a senior member of the Finance team, you will analyze financial data, oversee critical accounting processes, contribute to the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), support federal grant accounting and fixed asset management, and help ensure the integrity of the agency's financial reporting. Working collaboratively across departments, you'll provide accurate financial information that supports strategic decision-making and fiscal stewardship. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys solving complex problems, improving processes, and serving as a trusted technical resource within a public-sector environment. Key Responsibilities Duties may include, but are not limited to: Perform advanced governmental accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and month-end and year-end close activities. Prepare, analyze, and reconcile complex financial data while ensuring compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, grant requirements, and RTC policies. Support the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), financial statements, audit work papers, and responses to external auditors. Manage accounting activities related to operating and capital budgets, federal grants, fixed assets, cost allocations, and financial forecasting. Review financial transactions, contracts, reports, and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance. Analyze financial and statistical information, identify trends or discrepancies, and develop recommendations to improve financial processes and reporting. Collaborate with departments across the agency to provide financial guidance, resolve accounting issues, and support sound fiscal decision-making. Serve as a technical resource by coaching accounting staff, interpreting accounting standards, and promoting consistent financial practices. Participate in special projects and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen financial operations and organizational efficiency. Minimum Qualifications To be considered, candidates must meet one of the following: Six (6) years of applicable experience. Associate’s degree or higher. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties.
