Respiratory Therapist (M/W) - SEIU Melrose/Wakefield Hospital – 585 Lebanon Street, Melrose, MA Hours: 36 hours/week, Night shift (7p-7a) with every other weekend shift required. Job Overview: Respiratory Therapist sets up various types of equipment to administer prescribed doses of medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs. Administers all types of therapy including gas therapy, aerosol therapy, ventilatory assistance, and cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation. Licensed by the state of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care. Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Two (2) years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program. Duties and Responsibilities Assess and deliver therapeutic and diagnostic pulmonary care to patients of all ages in inpatient, outpatient, and sub‑acute settings. Administers and documents all procedures in accordance with department policy and procedure. Suggests appropriate therapy and communicates effectively to physicians and nurses. Complies with department policy for maintenance and operation of blood gas machines and sample analysis. Administers adult and geriatric ventilator care, aerosol therapy, medical gas therapy and bronchial hygiene therapy to all age groups per physician orders and departmental policy. Performs oral, nasotracheal, endotracheal and tracheal suctioning as needed, in accordance with departmental policy. In Special Care Nursery administers and documents all procedures per departmental policy. Suggests appropriate therapy and communicates effectively to physicians and nurses. Performs oximetry according to policy and identifies inaccurate results. Prioritizes tasks by planning and organizing time effectively. Handles crisis situations calmly and appropriately. Checks equipment and supplies before each workday to ensure proper operation and sufficient stock. Formulates care plan with input from patient and families when appropriate. Establishes measurement goals and communicates this information to the healthcare team. Documents all therapies accurately and completely in the medical record. Uses good judgment when interfacing with other staff and exercises tactful communication skills. Makes decisions based on clinical observations and protocol. Seeks appropriate advice when needed. Assesses potential discharge needs during hospitalization. Recognizes that patient and family teaching are integral to professional care and performs it routinely with documentation. Accepts direction and supervision positively without negative response. Demonstrates flexibility in cross‑training within the department. Completes forms, records, and cardexes accurately and on time. Informs supervisor of pertinent activities and problems, passing on job‑related information. Rotates on day, evening, and night tours of duty. Physical Requirements Frequent sitting, occasional standing and walking, and lifting of 5–10 lbs. Requires manual dexterity for fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard and respiratory equipment. Requires ability to see computer screen and reports. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to communicate effectively with all professional staff as well as all patients.
