Job Title: Advanced HVAC Technician

Job Description

The Advanced HVAC Technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and optimizes commercial and industrial HVAC systems while providing technical leadership and ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of building mechanical and control systems. This role focuses on reducing HVAC maintenance costs by performing high-quality repairs and replacements, mentoring junior technicians, and delivering exceptional customer service in complex facility environments.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial and industrial HVAC equipment, including chillers, boilers, air handling units (AHUs), rooftop units (RTUs), variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, variable air volume (VAV) systems, heat pumps, cooling towers, and building automation and control systems.
• Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical equipment to improve reliability and extend equipment life.
• Analyze system performance and recommend energy-efficient solutions and operational improvements.
• Respond promptly to emergency service calls and equipment failures to minimize downtime.
• Install, modify, and commission HVAC systems and related control systems in accordance with design specifications.
• Verify equipment operation and ensure all systems meet design, performance, and regulatory requirements.
• Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to complete installations and repairs.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and facility personnel during installation, maintenance, and upgrade projects.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical direction to HVAC technicians, apprentices, and maintenance personnel.
• Assist in training team members on best practices, safety procedures, troubleshooting methods, and proper use of tools and equipment.
• Lead complex repair, maintenance, and optimization activities on HVAC and control systems.
• Support workforce planning, including daily work assignments and prioritization of tasks.
• Adhere to all OSHA, EPA, company, and customer safety requirements and policies.
• Maintain EPA certification and follow proper refrigerant handling, recovery, and documentation procedures.
• Conduct job hazard assessments and promote safe work practices on all job sites.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical systems.
• Complete work orders, inspection reports, and service documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, equipment history, repairs, and parts usage.
• Provide clear recommendations for equipment replacement, upgrades, and capital improvements based on condition and performance.
• Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and mobile service applications to track work, update statuses, and document findings.
• Communicate professionally with clients and facility stakeholders, providing clear explanations of technical issues and recommended solutions.
• Build and maintain positive customer relationships through responsive, high-quality service and follow-up.
• Support mission-critical facility operations by maintaining high standards of workmanship, reliability, and system uptime.
• Comply with screening and drug testing requirements, as applicable to the role.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 7–10 years of commercial or industrial HVAC experience.
• EPA Universal Certification.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC controls, refrigeration systems, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment.
• Proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining chillers, boilers, AHUs, RTUs, VRF systems, VAV systems, heat pumps, cooling towers, and building automation and control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and mobile service applications.
• Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities for electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration systems.
• Strong understanding of building automation and control strategies.
• Leadership and team development skills to mentor technicians and apprentices.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage workload in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces safely.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in varying indoor and outdoor environments.
• Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, and physically demanding conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Technical school training or HVAC certification.
• Associate degree in HVAC Technology, Mechanical Systems, or a related field.
• Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or Trane.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Manufacturer certifications from Trane, Carrier, Daikin, York, or equivalent.
• Experience working in healthcare, data centers, industrial facilities, or other mission-critical environments.
• Experience in facilities maintenance and management, including installation, service, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC systems.
• Experience providing oversight and technical direction to HVAC technicians, apprentices, and maintenance personnel.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in commercial, industrial, institutional, and mission-critical facilities, working with complex HVAC, mechanical, and building automation systems. The position follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with onsite employee parking available. The work may require rotating on-call responsibilities and after-hours emergency response to support critical operations. You will travel occasionally to customer locations or multiple facilities as needed. The environment includes indoor and outdoor work, exposure to hot, cold, and noisy conditions, and physically demanding tasks such as lifting, climbing ladders, working at heights, and accessing confined spaces. Work is performed using tools, test equipment, and CMMS/mobile applications in a professional facilities and mechanical systems setting, with a strong emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance.

This is a Contract position based out of Charleston, SC.

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
