Business Unit: Naval Power Systems Location: Fitchburg, MA Career Functional Area: Mechanical Engineering Schedule: 9/80 Job Summary DRS NPS has an immediate need for a Mechanical Engineer II with a well-rounded skill set, including design, analysis, assembly support, and qualification/validation experience. The candidate will work independently, using judgment and discretion in making complex decisions. The role is responsible for working within a multidisciplinary project team ranging from 3-10+ engineers, detailers, and drafters in a matrix organization in fulfilling program requirements. The technical nature of this position requires previous experience in a collaborative role in program development and problem solving with other technical resources. Critical to success in the role is the ability to breakdown and organize complicated technical challenges and to find innovative solutions to those challenges. Equally important is the ability to clearly document / present project status within the team, to project leadership, and to other functions including senior management. As part of regular activities, this role will may have significant supplier and customer interaction. The ideal candidate is an individual possessing strong mechanical engineering technical skills and a working knowledge of thermal, stress, and other design considerations for rotating equipment (generators & electric motors). Job Responsibilities Involved with the design, fabrication and modification of mechanical and/or electro mechanical components, sub-systems and systems. May include Mechanical Analysis, Aerodynamics/Fluids, Thermal, Fluid Systems, Mechanical Packaging, or others. Evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services. Investigate solutions to product or process problems. Responsible for technical activity and completion of assigned task on time and budget Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems May use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments. Report of progress and status regularly Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements Develop prototypes to retire key development risks Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required Participates in preparation of less-complex proposals May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years of experience Competent technical expertise and application domain knowledge Proficient with Computer Aided Design (CAD) Tools (Solidworks and Siemens NX preferred) Proficient with Finite Element Analysis for structural and/or thermal (ANSYS preferred) Ability to work independently Preferred Qualifications Individual experience in product development from concept to qualified / fielded systems. Experience with the development of electric machines, electric motor/drive systems, electro-mechanical systems, marine gas turbines, and/or diesel engines. Experience with the design of large welded fabrications and complex assemblies. Strong engineering design skills; including knowledge in material selection, plate and weld sizing, and fastener design. Experience with execution of projects for the US military or Familiarity with industrial and military design specifications An Active security clearance U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment. The salary range for this position is $79,919-$114,285. This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications.
