Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools Job Description Job Title: School Counselor Salary Schedule: State Salary Schedule; CHCCS Salary Page Reports To: School Principal Salary Grade: School Counselor Work Location: Assigned School FLSA Status: Exempt Work Schedule: 10 Position Summary Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses all students' academic, career, and social/emotional development. The primary functions of the school counselor job description incorporate the North Carolina State Board of Education's guiding mission that every public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the twenty-first century. Essential Duties Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive school counseling program as outlined by the American School Counselor Association Develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program Involve other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator; develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the NC Comprehensive School Counseling Standard Course of Study and current individual school data; uses data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community/business leaders); maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders Uses the majority of time providing direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning, and Preventive and Responsive Services and most of the remaining time in program management, system support, and accountability (National standards recommend 80% of time in direct services and 20% of time indirect services) Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students Accurately interprets test results and other student data Assists teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies Helps the school administration identify and remedy school policies and programs that inhibit student and staff development Helps the school administration develop policies and programs that benefit student and staff development Reports to the school administration and staff about the annual goals and services of the counseling program Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs; consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs; implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed; accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services. Provides appropriate information to school personnel about the comprehensive school counseling program; assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data. Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of program implementation and effectiveness Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession and abides by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools Participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills as needed Serves as a member of the school-based committee as appropriate Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures Education/Experience Requirements N.C. An Educator License in School Counseling is required. Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university, OR Master's degree in equivalent field with add-on school counseling licensure required Completion of school counseling internship Physical Requirements Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
