Peer Writing Consultant

The Peer Writing Consultant will serve as an integral member of the Office of Academic Success and Student Development staff, supporting the College’s academic success and student development initiatives through the Writing Center. Under the supervision of the Director of Academic Success and Student Development, the Peer Writing Consultant will support writers throughout the writing process through individualized and small-group consultations, writing-related workshops, and the development of writing resources. Peer Writing Consultants will serve as learning guides and coaches who encourage writers to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and independence necessary for effective writing. Consultants may assist with any stage of writing, from brainstorming to the final draft, and with academic, professional, and personal writing projects, including research papers, business reports, presentations, and application essays. Consultants help writers do their own work; they do not complete assignments or edit writing for them. Peer Writing Consultants are expected to maintain a professional and supportive learning environment, collaborate with Office of Academic Success and Student Development staff, participate in required training and meetings, and contribute to the overall academic success of Bennett College students.

AREAS OF HIGH NEED

Academic writing, including research papers and course assignments. Professional and personal writing, including business reports, presentations, and application essays. Writing support at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming through the final draft.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provide individual and small-group writing consultations for students working on academic, professional, or personal writing projects. Facilitate learning by serving as a guide and coach rather than completing assignments or editing writing for students. Support writers throughout the writing process, including brainstorming, developing ideas, organizing, drafting, revising, and preparing final drafts. Help writers develop effective writing strategies, critical thinking, and approaches to independent writing. Adapt consultation strategies and instructional approaches to meet individual writer needs. Utilize appropriate technology, resources, and writing support methods to enhance student learning. Assess writer understanding and provide constructive feedback that supports continued writing development. Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success and Student Development to identify writing support needs and plan appropriate services. Visit classrooms to facilitate writing-related workshops and assist with the development of workshops, handouts, and other writing resources. Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain accurate writing consultation schedules and appointments through Bennett College MYWCONLINE. Maintain timely and accurate records of writing consultations and student progress by completing required client report forms in MYWCONLINE. Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and professional working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other members of the College community. Communicate professionally and appropriately with students and members of the Office of Academic Success and Student Development staff. Participate in required Peer Writing Consultant training, workshops, staff meetings, and professional development activities. Promote Writing Center services by speaking with faculty and students about Writing Center activities and available support. Work collaboratively with other Peer Writing Consultants and Office of Academic Success and Student Development staff to support student success initiatives. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to applicable College policies, procedures, and expectations. Project a professional image and demonstrate professionalism in conduct, communication, and interactions. Adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in the most current Peer and Professional Tutor Handbook. Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, initiative, and accountability in fulfilling assigned responsibilities. Perform other academic support and program-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a Bennett College student and eligible for work-study. Must have completed BP 151 and BP 152 with a grade of “B” or higher in each course. Must have or obtain two faculty letters of recommendation addressing writing strengths, interpersonal skills, and willingness to learn. Must be able to commit to a minimum of five hours of Writing Center work per week. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated interest in writing, learning, and engaging with the ideas of others. Ability or willingness to develop confidence in discussing writing with other people.Ability to work effectively with students with diverse academic needs, learning styles, and backgrounds. Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills. Dependable, punctual, responsible, and self-motivated. Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as a member of the Office of Academic Success and Student Development team. Willingness to learn new writing consultation techniques, technologies, and academic support strategies. Demonstrated professionalism in communication, conduct, and appearance. Commitment to fostering a positive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Students from all majors are welcome to apply. Peer Writing Consultants are members of the Office of Academic Success and Student Development staff and are expected to participate in required staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities. Specialized training in techniques for helping writers will be provided. The position requires a minimum commitment of five hours of Writing Center work per week. Writing consultant experience provides opportunities to strengthen reading, writing, speaking, interpersonal, and professional communication skills while helping others and building positive relationships with fellow consultants. Additional responsibilities and scheduling expectations may vary based on student and program needs.

WORK SCHEDULE

Hours will be assigned based on office needs, student availability, and Federal Work Study award limits. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester; hours may not exceed the Federal Work Study award allocation. Shifts are available during regular office hours, generally Monday through Friday. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Scheduling is coordinated with the supervisor. Schedule changes must be communicated at least 48 hours in advance except in cases of emergency. This position does not guarantee hours beyond the Federal Work Study award amount. Students must monitor their remaining balance throughout the award period.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: This position is paid at an hourly rate as established by the institution's student employment wage scale. Specific rate will be confirmed upon hire. Award Usage: Federal Work Study earnings are not automatically applied to tuition or fees; students receive a paycheck for hours worked. Timekeeping: Students are responsible for reporting hours accurately and in compliance with institutional and federal guidelines.
