Job Summary

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Director is a critical position within the Company, providing strategic direction, oversight, and management of the organization's EHS programs and initiatives. This position leads efforts to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as foster a culture of safety and sustainability across the organization. This position plays a crucial role in safeguarding employees, the community, and the environment while driving operational excellence and risk reduction. This position reports to the VP of HR, Safety & Training and typically has 2 or more direct reports.

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Responsible for hiring, training, performance management, and termination of staff.
• Develop and implement the overall EHS strategy aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
• Collaborate with senior management to integrate EHS considerations into the company’s overall business strategies.
• Lead investigations involving serious injuries, vehicle accidents, environmental incidents, near misses, and property damage events, ensuring timely root cause analysis, corrective actions, and organizational learning.
• Monitor and interpret applicable EHS regulations and standards, ensuring compliance at all levels of the organization.
• Oversee the submission of necessary reports and permits to relevant regulatory bodies.
• Establish and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders.
• Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards and risks across various operations.
• Partner with Human Resources, Operations, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators to oversee workers' compensation, auto liability, and general liability claims, while driving injury reduction and return-to-work initiatives.
• Develop and execute risk management plans to mitigate and control identified risks.

• Design and implement health and safety programs, policies, and procedures to create a safe working environment for all employees.
• Promote a strong safety culture through training, awareness campaigns, and engagement activities.
• Must have a thorough understanding of DOT regulations, including those related to the transportation of hazardous materials, vehicle maintenance, driver qualifications, hours of service, and more.
• Develop comprehensive policies and procedures that align with DOT regulations and ensure that all employees involved in transportation operations are aware of and follow these protocols.
• Lead efforts to minimize the organization’s environmental impact through sustainability initiatives and waste reduction programs.
• Implement and maintain environmental management systems and certifications.
• Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for EHS and track progress toward achieving objectives.
• Develop and maintain emergency response, crisis management, and business continuity protocols related to employee health, safety, environmental incidents, and natural disasters.
• Prepare regular reports for senior management on EHS performance.
• Develop and manage the EHS department budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources.
• Recruit, train, and mentor EHS professionals, fostering a high-performing and motivated team.
• Provide guidance and support to EHS staff in their daily activities.
• Other job duties as assigned by supervisor.

Key Performance Measurements:

• Improved Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR).
• DOT regulatory compliance; sustained improvement.
• Safety training completion rate.
• Other key performance indicators as assigned.

• High school diploma or GED, required.
• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
• Master's degree in Safety, Environmental Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or similar credential preferred .
• DOT compliance certifications or transportation safety training preferred.
• Must have 10+ years of progressive experience in Environmental, Health & Safety, Fleet Safety, DOT Compliance, Risk Management, or related operational safety functions, including experience supporting dispersed field operations.
• Must have 5+ years’ experience in EHS in a leadership position.
• Experience managing EHS budgets, capital safety improvement projects, and vendor relationships.
• Must pass a background check and drug screen.
• Demonstrated experience leading EHS programs across multiple locations and geographically dispersed operations.
• Demonstrated success in developing and implementing EHS strategies and programs.
• Extensive knowledge of Federal and State-specific OSHA /DOT, and Environmental regulations required.
• Familiarity with best practices in asset protection, post-accident, and claims management.
• Success at executing accident analysis programs and corrective action processes.
• Ability to interact with all levels of employees, from hourly production workers to corporate executives.
• Industrial equipment, maintenance, and fleet safety background are highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of Hazmat and environmental processes and regulations.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• Must be willing to travel 30-50% with some overnight travel required.
