Food Service Specialist Substitute - IDEA Lopez (26-27)

Role Mission The Food Service Specialist Substitute (FSS sub) is essential in maintaining campus food service operations. The person(s) in this role are asked to provide coverage for when Food Service Specialists (FSS) are absent or fail to show up for their scheduled shift. The FSS sub ensures that appropriate quantities of food are prepared, portioned, and served to IDEA students. Responsibilities Provide food service coverage in place of FSS, ensuring proper food quantities are prepared, portioned, and served. Assist in cutting/chopping fruits and vegetables, following recipes and kitchen processes. Monitor students during meal periods to encourage appropriate behavior, intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, and prevent sharing of food. Perform kitchen cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, and disposing of trash. Maintain accurate student meal counts and ensure reimbursable meals are taken by students. Convey meal participation information to cafeteria managers and report any counting or claiming issues. Ensure meal timing and service meet schedules, encouraging students to choose meals quickly to maintain line flow. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitization per state guidelines, preparing for inspections. Record and provide notes on food pulled from refrigerator or storage in official food production records. Perform daily and periodic audits (BIC, HACCP, milk product rotation). Assist with cashier duties at point of sale, ensuring reimbursement identification and cash handling. Address safety hazards, employee conflicts, and report to managers promptly. Participate in weekly huddles, show reliable attendance, and communicate shift availability. Support team culture, respect, and collaboration across departments. Qualifications High school Diploma or equivalency (preferred). Food service, restaurant, or hospitality experience (preferred). Local food safety permit or certification. Knowledge and Skills Understanding of food recipes and ability to gather necessary materials. Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices. Working knowledge of kitchen production procedures (setup, production, service, cleanup, reset). Ability to operate kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils. Basic math skills. Ability to lift, bend, pull, push, twist as required. Works well under pressure in a team setting. Ability to work well around children and provide customer service.
