DJS RESIDENT ADVISOR TRAINEE (Contractual)

Position Details Grade: ASTD11 Location of Position: Western Maryland Children's Center, 18420 Roxbury Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Main Purpose of Job The DJS Resident Advisor Trainee is an entry-level position responsible for providing supervision and guidance to youth residing in a facility operated by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Responsibilities include observing, interacting and assisting youth with everyday life skills and advising them of appropriate alternative behaviors. The position is assigned a regular shift but may be required to work other shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required by staffing needs. The incumbent may be subject to call-in based on staffing needs. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: None. Note: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees in this classification must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle; employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Special Requirements U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status Must be at least 21 years of age A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing An oral interview Physical and psychological examinations Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.03, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. Benefits Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost of these benefits. You may also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
